Hi

Following on from an earlier discussion about the townland of Ardgallagher and how it may have looked in the early 19th century, I have found a map of the neighbouring townlands of Scrabbagh, Feragh and Cartron, listing tenants. Ardgallagher is only mentioned on the bottom (no tenants given, spelt as Ardgollagher). The map if from the Longfield map collection (1770-1840) and claims to be from 1770. It's called:

A map of lands at Feragh Scrabbagh and Meelick in the barony of Ballintober North and County of Roscommon, also lands at Cartron. Names of tenants and acreage of holdings shown.

I've spent ages looking at the NLI catalogue online for maps/plans/plots of land of Lord Westmeath (who owned Ardgallagher), but to no avail. Would someone know an easy way to get a map of Ardgallagher? There must have been one made, if it's already named on this one.

Thank you.

  • Fionn,

The Griffith's Valuation (mid-1800s) map of Ardgallagher should be found here:

    https://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/single_layer/i8.php?lat=&longt…

If you can't access it, go to Ask About Ireland, choose Griffith's Valuation, then Griffith's Places.

    Good luck.

  • You can also see a map of Ardgallagher at this site, along with info about the townland.  The map at the site is interactive, so you can enlarge or shrink it and can use your cursor to move around, seeing where it is located:  https://www.townlands.ie/roscommon/ballintober-north/kilmore/kilmore/ar…

  • Thank you Patricia &Kevin. Have all those maps. We're looking for the earlier map made c 1770 which should be on catalogue.nli.ie but is eluding me.

  • Fionn,

I can't speak specifically about the Ardgollager map, but there are two general issues about such maps. Firstly, alot of maps haven't survived, even though there are maps of neighbouring areas. I suspect that if the map was available it would be on the site. Secondly, maps like the one shown were often commissioned by landlords for estate management purposes. While Ardgollagher is mentioned as a neighbouring townland, it may be owned by a different landlord. and therefore not mapped in detail. It is very frustrating to be so close and yet so far! There is a detailed 1833 map of neighbouring townlands where I live, but the townland I live in is not covered because it was owned by a different landlord. I presume you are aware of the Down Survey site http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/index.html and the Elphin census of 1749 https://www.irishancestors.ie/elphin-diocesan-census-1749-92 which may be some help, but are not detailed maps with names.

    Best wishes, Kieran

  • Hi Kieran
Thank you for bringing the Down Survey to light... I had not investigated it, thinking it was just Co.Down!
It's fantastic. I found Ardgallagher and the original landowner in 1641 before the Earl of Westmeath. And the maps are lovely.
Cannot find out who was the landowner of Glooria/Cloongreaghan in Ardcarn (Cootehall). Not any of the Cootes or the people who had the land in 19th century. Any suggestions where to look? Multiple random searches of the internet yielded no fruitful names.
    Thank you again.

  • Fionn,

    See this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cootehall.

Also the Down Survey site gives some information on ownership of Cloongreahan pre and post 1641. Go to the page 'Landowner by name'. Navigate to the area of interest and keep zooming in as far as you can. This gives townland detail if you 'click' on the townland. The townland contains 'Prughlish' and is directly right of Lough Key. It seems that it was owned before and after 1641 by Earl Clanrickard.

    Best wishes, Kieran

  • Fionn,

You might also be interested in the Books of Survey and Distribtion for Roscommon at this link https://www.irishmanuscripts.ie/digital/surveydistributionv1/Books%20of…. You will find the old name for Cloongreghan on the TCD map and you can do a search of the actual book. They do give the same information! You might find something else interesting if you do a searh for Ardcarn.

I don't know if there were two Earls of Clanrickard, but Earl Clanrickard also owned the townland in Galway where I lived. He was Burke from Portumna. If it is the same person, I don't know how he got to Ardcarn!

    Best wishes, Kieran

  • Thank you Kieran
These landlords seemed to have random plantations dotted around the country, and probably never visited half of them.
I will investigate the above after the Easter festivities!
It's so addictive - a new strand to look at!
This is a full time job! It's just so interesting seeing where people came from and met up.
I do have a conundrum though... so my mum's side are from Roscommon and my dad's from Kildare... but I have had several DNA connections matching both sides... I can only think these connections were made after emigration to US. But these DNA cousins are 4th/5th predicted cousins so tricky to find their real connection (especially if they're not that bothered!).
How did you end up in Roscommon?
    Have a good Easter.
