Hi Geraldine & Nicole,

Thank you both for taking the time to respond to my Regan posting.  I will have to admit that while I do have a FB account, I am not a big fan of the FB environment.  Perhaps it somehow relates to the many postings I find on FB showing a picture of the food that the users are eating at that moment in a local restaurant :)  ...get a life!...back to the subject at hand.

I met up with a Thomas Regan by way of the DNA 23andMe site.  Thomas was found to be a known member of the Lisduff Regans.  As it turned out his Regans lived directly across the street from my Finn homestead, so we had an early bond so to speak due to the proximity of his Regan homestead.  Thomas put me in touch with several members of his family and we formed an Ad Hoc "Regan Email Group".  With the assistance of this group I put together a Regan familly tree which can be viewed at https://thecore.com/efinn/gene/regan.html I have obtained BMD documentation for every member of this Regan family tree with the exception of the two oldest members, Thomas Regan married to Winifred Corcoran.  This entry is supported by verbal information only.  Unfortunately this is a key entry in the tree as our 23andMe DNA results have predicted that our common ancestor should be AT or very NEAR this point.

With regard to doing genealogical research via DNA testing, I was very LUCKY to meet up with Thomas Regan on 23andMe.  Contrary to the commercial hype that is pushed by the big DNA companies, DNA is NOT going to tell you the names of your ancestors.  If you and your "DNA Cousin" haven't put in considerable research already...finding a 4th or 5th DNA cousin isn't going to be of much value unless both have useable data that can be exchanged.  After meeting thousands of DNA counsins on 23andMe only a very small percentage of them have done that required research.

And as a direct response to Nicole, I would very much enjoy the possibility of exchanging research data with you.  Most of my Regan data has been obtained from the Loughglynn & Tibohine RC Parish Registers.

Hi Ed, I've already previously been in contact with Nicole Wenzel on Ancestry as she matched with my brothers DNA results there. I also matched with the authors of this article about an area near Carrick on Shannon called 'Reganstown' who matched through my aunts DNA on MyHeritage. There's a very concise and interesting PDF document they've created available to download on the subject. I can trace with documentation that my Regan family first appeared in County Longford (where I still live) in the mid 1850s, though I'm still not sure exactly which part of Roscommon my great grandfather Simon Regan hailed from.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my Regan Posting.  One new piece of data that I should have posted earlier is that I have now uploaded my raw DNA data file to MyHeritage and spend the major part of my DNA research on that website seeing as how 23andMe has disabled most of their genealogy related tools following the major hack that took place on their site back in 2023.  Most unfortunately this means that I will have to put in a tremendous amount of effort to develop a usable list of researched and confirmed DNA cousins on MyHeritage...a task that took me years to accomplish on 23andMe. 

If you have viewed my Regan Tree at  https://thecore.com/efinn/gene/regan.html you will note that most of the Regans in that tree have been found to be born or living in the civil parish of Tibohine with notable exceptions being James Regan (no birth/bapt record yet) married to Ellen Mahon and James' father who has been verbally identified by family as a Thomas Regan (so far undocumented).

Now that I am a MyHeritage member, as mentioned above I will be looking for DNA matches with other Finn & Regan family members and I noticed you made mention of "your aunt" being on MyHeritage.  Please pass her name along to me so I can see if she is showing up as one of my DNA matches.  I will assume with your help she will have uploaded her family tree so I can do some comparison shopping so to speak!

One additional recent finding is the marriage of a DominickRegan to Ellenor Mulroony Fin on 7 Feb 1819 in the Loughglynn RC Parish Records for the townland of LISDUFF.  This marriage record as well as the baptism records for several of their children is providing very convincing evidence that Ellenor is most likely a sibling of my gr-gr-grandfather Michael Fin (witness at her marriage).  As for the given name of Dominick, I can only say that it has been used consistently in the Regan Family Tree, however at the present time I have not found a documented connection to the Regans in their Family Tree.  One important finding is that if we consider the established Irish naming paterns you will have to notice that the first born male child of James Regan married to Ellen Mahon is a Dominick Regan and the second born female is a Ellen Regan (these are very good signs!).
