Hello,

I'm looking for the Marriage of Patrick Kelly and Brigid Gavin. I have found a Number of their Children but haen't found their Marriage Registers.

I did find a Marriage Between a Patrick Shelly and Brigid Gavin 31st January 1818 St.Peters Athlone, County Roscommon. The information is on the Roots Ireland and Irish Genealogy Sites.

I think and still do that the Patrick Shelly on the Roots Ireland Site is the wrong Spelling and it should be KELLY. I asked Roots Ireland to check and they came back with Shelly as being correct BUT (LOL) the Example they gave for comparising was poor.(Best way I could say it) I was to check the name Shine that was about two marriage above on the Irish Genealogy Site. If you check a number of other Kelly names on the same page plus oppisite page(As I see them on the Irish Genealogy Site),they look like KELLY.   ( Plus the way the h is written on othere names)  Any help would be much appriciated.

All the Best

Peter

  • Peter:

I agree with you that the word is Kelly. There are some Kelly names where there is less separation between the two parts of the K but there are others that look exactly like the January 31st marriage.

  • Hi Peter, I am a Kelly from the same area, I have seen the records for the birth because i thought it was my family, but not.  Jump onto facebook onto Clan Kelly, we are just Kelly blood, so you will find your fam fast.  My family is from exactly the same place. Unfortunately, St Peter's Athlone can be labelled under Roscommon, Westmeath and Longford, I even have Moate on a document, so its confusing.  I have just done a search on the Facebook Clan Kelly group, there are LOTS of Gavins who married Kellys from the same area, which means they are YOUR family too. xx

When you look at the parish records, we ALL look for the ONE record we want, find it, but then look at the names around that entry and you will see the sisters, brothers, cousins, uncles etc.

With our delightful Kelly name, there are a LOT of variations, including Skelly.  At the time, literacy wasn't available to everyone, so spelling errors are frequent.  BUT there are also Skelly, Kelly, Kelley, Keyley, etc.  The marriage is there and there are also a number of children on other records.

With the name Bridget, it has heaps of variations, so try Honora, Hanora as well.  I usually go to Family search and put in Bridget then let the name variation be broad, because it depends on how it was recorded.

SO,  I have found them. Patrii Kelly and Bridgidae Gavin (threw the whole alphabet in for fun)  HEAPS of variations for the names and some records are in Latin to make it super fun.   Their wedding IS recorded as St Peter's Athlone in the DIOCESE OF ELPHIN.  IF you go onto the National Library of Ireland NLI you can type in ATHLONE and choose the second option which is St Peter's Athlone, Diocese of Elphin, then you can filter the results to marriage, year and month.  But it is there.

Please pm me if you want the link, otherwise looking forward to seeing you meet the Kellys on FB xx
