Hello all you brains trust out there!
I have a question about something I've come across recently while looking through the Catholic Parish Registers, and in particular the recordset for Templederry in Tipperary,
On several of the baptism entries there is the word 'Settled' written. Does anyone know what that means? It's written on man but not all of the entries.
An example is on page 15 of this link (1 Jan 1845): 02482/06, Templederry - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI
I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light??
Kind regards
Desley

Desley,
My understanding of the annotation is that it's to do with money. The priest charged a small fee for baptisms and consequently needed to keep accounts. Every month in this case, it seems. These “settleds” are all at the end of a month. I assume that when the priest had received all the payments for a given period and sent a return to the bishop (or whatever the precise procedure was) he marked the register for that month as settled.
