I have some details from Ancestry.com, but the connection ends with my great grandfather.

My grandfather was Vincent C Seery, born 1907 in Newark NJ. His father was John J Seery, born 1861 in Ireland. I can't pinpoint where he came from using ancestry. The information stops there.

If it's any help, John J Seery was married to a Bibianna Seery (maiden name Whalen/Whelan) (born 1867 in New Jersey). Probably anything that happened in the US won't help.

While we're on it, Bibianna's father is Patrick Whelan, also from Ireland. Again, the line stops there. Any help or guidance is appreciated!

I assume that John J. Seery came to Ireland in the 1880s? Do you know the names of any of his siblings? What was the name of his oldest son? Do you have his death record and/or obituary and is there any info regarding his parents names?

I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and there are three John Seery baptismal records all in Co. Westmeath. There were also two John Seery baptismal records in 1860 in Co. Westmeath. Many immigrants made themseleves younger when they came to their new country.

  • I just noticed that I was off a generation. Vincent Seery was my great-grandfather.

Thank you for the information. I know what I have is not a lot to go on. However, I do have some more information now that I know what to look for.

John J Seery arrival is conflicting according to the NJ state census. (1900 census has 1875; 1910 census has arrival in 1880; 1920 census has 1871). I'm pretty sure the three records are all him due to where he lived (Newark NJ), his job (engineer), and his family members all match. Also, his marriage to Bibianna was in 1881 according to the 1900 census.

John J Seery and Bibianna had many children, all born in the US.

Catherine Seery (1888-1968); Eugene Seery (1891-1977); Agnes Seery (1892-??); Raymond Seery (1897-1978); Irene Seery (1900?-?); Anne Seery (1900?-?); Scelestien (Celestine?) Seery (1903-1923) and Vincent C Seery (1907-1996)

Thanks again for taking a look. It'll be good to have an idea where he came from before coming to the US.

I went on Ancestry and from the 1905 New Jeresey census, it appears there was also a son Leon born around 1885 and a daughter Mary born around the same time. I looked at Ancestry trees which have John J. Seery and no one mentions Leon and Mary.

What I was trying to determine was the name of the oldest son since many times the first son would be named after the paternal grandfather. I have never seen Leon anywhere in Ireland so I'm stuck.

Have you tested your DNA? You may get matches on your Seery/Whelan line who have more info on the origins of the family in Ireland.

More than likely your great-great grandfather John came from Co. Westmeath but without more info (father's name at a minimum) we can't confirm a baptismal record.
