Known Details for Michael McCoy
• born circa 1818 in Dublin

• son of plasterer (father = Patrick McCoy)

• Transported to Australia for picking pockets at age ~16.

• Trial held in Dublin on 7 Aug 1832, sentenced to transportation and 7yrs labour.

• Arrived in Australia aboard ship "Royal Admiral" on 20 Oct 1833/4

• Convict records describe him as 4ft 10 1/4 in; Ruddy and Freckled; Brown Hair; Grey eyes; large scar on left cheek; five blue dots on back of ball of right thumb; little finger on right hand crooked; 'M' and fish tattooed inside lower left arm.

• On arrival, was assigned to work at "Invermein" near Scone in the Hunter Valley

• After serving his time, settled in Nundle in property named "Home Rule"

• Married Mary Ann Ryan in 1858, who was born 1/6/1841 in Kilmoyer, Tipperary

• They had 8 children (details in attached image)

 

We are stuck making the connection back through Michael to our Irish ancestors.

We currently know nothing more than his father's name (Patrick) and his possible profession (plasterer).

I have more info about our known extended family (and my DNA) on Ancestry.

Any help connecting back to our Irish family would be greatly appreciated.

  • Do you know what religious denomination your McCoy family were , or have any details on Michael's mother ?
    e.g. from his marriage or death record

    Records for most of the Catholic & Church of Ireland parishes in Dublin City re available on the free IrishGenealogy website - I had a look for possible matches for a Michael baptised around 1815 which a father named Patrick, but no luck in the Dublin city records that I could see..

    'Dublin' can also refer to county Dublin, so a much wider area to search.. not all parishes have records back as far as1815, and some Church of Ireland registers were lost in the civil war..

    Register images for most other Catholic parishes in Ireland (over 1,000) are available on the National Library of Ireland website, and have been indexed by FindMyPast & Ancestry. I had a search through the Dublin City and County Catholic records for McCoy (and similar) baptisms but unfortunately nothing promising showed up for your Michael..

  • Just to add - some online trees have a record attached showing this Michael baptised at St. Mary Catholic parish in Dublin City in January 1815 - the record selected is actually a partial index record, the corresponding full entry in the baptism register shows the parents for that baptism as John McCoy and Eliza.
