I recently discovered your website and am grateful to have found such a wonderful resource of volunteers.

My 2nd g-grandfather Anthony Handlen was born to father Robert Handlen (a weaver) and (unknown) mother in Cork in about 1819. A possible sibling is George Handlen, born in Ireland in about 1827. That's all of the Ireland information I have. Anthony emigrated to the small town of Wortley, South Yorkshire, England (date unknown), and married Ellen Barry, from Wexford, in 1852. He was father to twelve children, was a master tailor, and died at about age 76 in Wortley after being run over by a trap (horse and carriage). His Find-A-Grave memorial is at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/214018590/anthony-handlen

My Ancestry and 23andme DNA has been out for four years and has not resulted in any conclusive Irish Handlen connections. Being in the US, I have also been unable to track down any Handlen records in Ireland, and welcome any suggestions and/or assistance. My wife and I are in the early stages of planning a 2025 trip to Ireland, my ancestral homeland. Your efforts are greatly appreciated; thank you very much for your time!

  • Steve,

I did not find your Anthony in the baptisms at irishgenealogy.ie.

I did find a Robert Hanlon (a variation of the name Handlen) in the Tithe Applotments in 1828, as follows:

Hanlon  Robert   Kilally     Kilworth               Cork  1828

    I hope this is helpful.

And just so you know, there are many Irish records online now--I am in the U.S. but am able to search many Irish databases.

  • Thank you, Patricia. I have a friend who is a Hanlon; I call him my brother from another mother. :)

Handlen is on my paternal side and I've found records outside the US scarce for the surname as spelled, especially in the time period I'm searching. On the other hand, my maternal side has Jones, which is quite the opposite problem!

I appreciate you looking this up for me.
