Hello,

I am wondering if my relation Mary Daly (Mar 1844, Muintervarra) born to Timothy Daly and Catherine Lyhane is related to her male siblings that I have on my Ancestry tree. Reason being is that her register page looks very different from that of her three brothers...and their pages also list the place/townland Killeen. Her page says nothing about the place.

The brother's registries all have a vertical line down the page separating the names from the places, Mary's does not.

The brothers are John (1842), Daniel (1846), and Timothy (1853)....all have the same parent's names.

I don't understand if John's registry page looks like his two brother's, why doesn't Mary's look like that too?

Attached are Mary and John's registry pages for reference.

Thanks!

  • Hi Carolyn!

The priest who baptized the children determined the format of the register pages and whether or not he included the townland/place name where the family lived. I thought maybe two different priests were involved. However, on both attachments which you provided, it appears the priest was Fr. Murphy. Can't explain why in 1844 the townland was omitted.

You will find that in the second half of the 19th century, many parishes had a template of sorts for recording baptismal information which made it easier to discern the information.

  • Thanks once again, Roger!

You are always so insightful..it never crosssed my mind to look at the name of the priest.  The two different registry pages looked like they might have been two different areas in Muintervarra, and if I had a dollar for every Mary Daly in Ireland, I'd be a millionaire! To make matters worse in my family, Mary married a Denis Daly!

    Gratefully,

    Carolyn

P.S. thought you'd like to know we head to Ireland next week, and will be reuniting with my mother's paternal and maternal sides - all from Roscommon - descendants of those siblings that never emigrated to the US - Cox and Regan are the surnames

Cox is a very common name in Leitrim around the Dromod area

Have you found your Cox and Regan families

  • Hi Geraldine,

Yes, I have! I have known about the Cox side from Ballymagrine, Roscommon as my family has been to Ireland to visit them, and some have been here as well. The Regans are from Cootehall, Roscommon; and while I was aware of the family (10 emigrated to the US), I recently read an article from this website the Regan's of Roscommon, and it turns out that my second cousin, 1 time removed, Dara Larkin, wrote the article. So, I am meeting with my Cox and Regan relations on May 12, 2022 in Carrick on Shannon. I am a descendant of these two families both emigrating to the San Fracisco, CA area between 1880 & 1890. They are my mother's paternal grandparents.

It was wonderful to make these connections!

    Thanks,

    Carolyn Toohey
