John married Anne Cahill (1825).  His son John married Bessie McMahon (1860).  If anyone else is researching these couples, I would like to connect with you.

  • Barbara,

I'm not researching your family.  However, I have had to look at Oldcastle ( and surrounds) for my own family for several years.  In 1827, John McBride is recorded as living in Goles and Mayo  ( perhaps an earlier variation of your Golashane) on 9.5 acres.  The entire townland was actually less than 50 acres and there were only eight tenancies.  Significantly, his joint tenancy was shared with a Thomas Cahill.  Not sure if this is worth anything to you, but it is yours anyway,

  • Go to AskaboutIreland, check Griffiths Valuations.  It would appear that John McBride leased one lot, while another owned by a John McBride was UNOCCUPIED.   Year is 1854.  It may be that John the father had died recently.

    Barbara,

A couple of minutes spare this morning,  Not sure of your background or location. I have attached a PDF file, trying to explain for myself, the location of Golashane and have found that, like so many other Irish place names, repetition is quite common. In the 1901 Census,  there are two McBrides still listed in the Census  :

Mc BrideOwen 33 Male Son Roman Catholic Co Meath  Farmer's Son  Read and write-     Widower

  • Thank you !

That's Bessie, (Elizabeth) John2's wife and their son Owen.

What I really can't find are their son Patrick b 1862 and their daughter Bessie (Elizabeth) b 1871.  I'm thinking Patrick had to leave Ireland, but I can't find him in USA.  Must be Australia or England.  And Bessie must have died, I guess.  Death records are awful in Moynalty.

Thanks for the map !  I had never seen that before.  I'll use it in my book !

    Thanks for your efforts !

  • Barbara,

I feel there is more likelihood that Patrick migrated to America than to Australia or England.  If you go Familydsearch, you are able to search for Patrick McBride, born 1862, Meath, father John and Mother Elizabeth.  You may have to be a member, but the search should be free.  The difficulty is that preciseness is not good enough to isolate one definite result.  I returned 367 records from 1860 to 1863, but only 10 were from 1862 ( 1861).  I am fairly sure that, if he lived on through childhood, he cannot be found in most Australian States,  I did not get Tasmanian, but electoral Rolls eliminated him from all but a couple.  I could not find him in early 20th Century English censuses.

  • Thank you so much !!  I've never researched anyone is England or Australia before, and I didn't even know where to start ! Thank you for doing that for me!  Well, that certainly narows down my options for where to find Patrick.  I will get back to work on it.

Patrick is the first born son, so I thought he'd stay around to inherit the farm, but he didn't.  His brother Peter got the farm. Patrick's older sister left in 1880, so maybe when be became of age, he left to be with her.  I'll keep looking !

Thanks again for your assistance !!   You have been such a big help !!

  • Barbara,

I'm up a little early this morning, with nothing to do and it's raining.  Just two matters that I can't solve further.  I came across a Patrick McBride death in Sydney in 1925  (  MCBRIDE PATRICK     10181/1925      66YRS MENTAL HOSP   GLADESVILLE DRUMMOYNE  )    Nothing suggests he is your Patrick, but he is the only one of six, whose parents are not listed.

Secondly,  Rootsireland suggests that a Patrick McBride died in Co Meath in 1883.  As no other information is available, I cannot say anything else, other than there were 20 McBride deaths in Meath between 1878 and 1888, three of whom were named John..

    Barbara,

Just a quick addition.  These are the Patrick McBrides, born 1862, in the US Censuses of 1900 and 1910.  Were there others???   I don't know.

Perhaps a final piece of information for you to digest.  I am having trouble finding suitable searches.  The Griffiths Valuations tell us that Cahill and McBride were still names in Golashane, Moynalty.  I have referred to this before.  This simply provides you with the records, as they are at Askabout Ireland.

  • Good Morning !

So nice to hear from you again !!  Thank you for all your efforts for me.

I too saw the Cahill/McBride entries in Griffiths.  I have done no research into the Cahills, but in the 1827 Tithes, John1 McBride (b ca 1800), is jointly leasing with a Thomas Cahill, which I presume to be his father-in-law.  In Griffiths, the fact that John2 McBride (b 1860) is now the landowner, told me his older brother Patrick had left/died.  Hence, my search for him.

Maybe I can tackle the Cahills next.  Just need to find Patrick and his sister Bessie first.  I'll keep trying !  Thanks for all the hints !!  I will follow them through!!

  • Barabara,

I'm thinking on my feet today, as we are likely to be busy.  Elizabeth McBride marriages have surprised me a little bit.  Rootsireland suggests there were 43 marriages of an Elizabeth McBride in Ireland between 1885 and 1905.  Yet none were in Meath or Cavan.  While there were 4 deaths of an Elizabeth McBride in all of Ireland, there were none in either Meath or Cavan. Elizabeth may have moved to the U.S., but possibly not as Elizabeth McBride.  There was no reference to an Elizabeth McBride born in Ireland in either the 1890 or 1900 Census of the U.S.  If you check the 1901 Census of Ireland, there are 30 Elizabeth Mc Brides, but none shows a Co Meath birth place.
