Hello - I am trying to 'map' out all of the McGowan's of Genaboghil - specifically the decendants of James McGowan born circa 1790 - via DNA I am a decendant of his line and I am trying to see how my Great-Grandfather Cornelius McGowan fits into his line. It appears from Griffiths Valuation that James had a rather large area and as no other "McGowan" is listed for Genaboghil I am surmising that the entire family lived on this plot -
I believe I have exhausted what is available on line and have created the line on Family Search (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/G618-PQG)
Are there any local records that can be reviewd? What would have been the local cemetary where the McGowan (Catholic) line would be burried - is it on line?
I am mainly curious to confirm whether James had a son "Patrick" and whether there is any documents for him.
Thank you!!

Maureen:
I located the 1833 Tithe listings for James McGowan. He was leasing 62 acres in Glenaboghil.

Have you looked at the 1901 census for Glenaboghil (erroneously shown as Glenabohill)? I can see some additional daughters to James McGowan.

There are no early church records for the parish of Glenties. The parish has a chapel in Fintown which is very close to Glenaboghil so my guess is that the family was buried in the cemetery adjacent to St. Colmcille's RC church in Fintown.

Hi Maureen
Have you searched irishgenealogy.ie ?
I have found a good number of records for McGowans....however, the Irish had many colourful ways of spelling...so in these records Glenaboghil is spelled: GLENAHOHIL
the events below were registered at GLENTIES, however for a thorough exploration of the family do also have a look at DUNGLOE and LETTERKENNY registrations.Connell McConnell married Catherine McDevitt in 1866
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…here is the link to the birth of Connell McGowan b. 1870
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…he had three older siblings: James b.1867 / Mary b.1867 (which I know does not make sense) but everything fits. plus Ann b.1869
Catherine died in 1922 / the witness was her son - John
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…Connell died in 1901 at Glenamohil / the witness was his sister - Ann
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…The above was found with only a brief explore. Have a good prowl around. Good Luck

Thank you Janice!
A mystery is Nancy Quinn vs Ann Quin - could they possibly be the same person? It appears that William McGowan (1826) had children with these two women - yet I can't find a marriage registration for either - I have found a birth registration for James McGowan son of William and Nancy Quinn - all other children of William I have located are with Ann Quinn - by the 1911 Census - 'Nancy" is listed with Patrick, John and Bridget as her children - but their birth registrations say the mother is "Ann Quinn"

Maureen:
Nancy is a variant of Anne.

Hi Maureen - I am related to McGowan descendants via marriage through the McDevitt's, Quinn's and Heron's. If you want to compare DNA let me know - I'm on Ancestry and MyHeritage.

Hi Maureen,
I've only just happened across your post. I'm a direct decendent of James McGowan (1790-1898) and have much of that family line mapped out. My father, also James McGowan, was reared in the glen. Send me an email to museumbrendan@gmail.com and I'll send you what I have.
Beir bua,
