Oates family

Hi Kate, I have been asked to look at unanswered queries and am doing them in no discernible fashion, firstly you have done very well to get back to 1806 as pre 1864 or 1845 for Protestant marriages we are relaint on church records and about 40% of pretestant records were lost in the Civil War as they were centralised in the Public records Office in the Four Courts which was hit by a shell and there was a fire, RC records are patchy particulary prior to 1830 and even after with some missing etc, Catholic Emancipation only came into being in 1829 following the Penal Laws etc

I attach a link to a subscription site but you get free surnames searchs and it appears to me that in Griffiths Valuation there were only 2 Oates families in Tipperary, so most likely yours, also see it could be a variant of Quirke or Kirk which is a more northerly variation. The Gaelic word Coirce means oats but that is just an aside. https://www.johngrenham.com/ 

There is work been done on census substitutes such as this one, mainly around land registry from about 1715 I think, keep an eye on this, I done a quick search and there  are no Oates in Tipperary, unfortunately it also brings back Coates. This is an ongoing voluntary project so keep an eye.

You could contact the library in Tipperary, think it is in Thurles and there is a Tipperary History website, as the name is rare in Tipperary any mention is probably a relative. Also often local history societies bring out books on the area, usually one off publications so can be tricky to get your hands on one.
