I am looking for information about Randalstown. In particular I am looking at whether there was a mother and baby home. I have been told that Drummaul House may have housed one. The baby was born in 1861 to John O'Neill and Cath Boyle.

  • Kazz,

I live in Randalstown. Drummaul House is a care home for the elderly. It’s only been a care home in recent years. In the 1860s it was a private house.

I don’t know of any mother and baby home in the area in the 1860s. In general, in the 1800s, the family looked after newborn children, farming them out to relatives if the mother was unable to manage. In extremis, the Church or the Poor Law commissioners (ie the workhouse) might offer help.
