Following an enquiry from Melbourne I am trying to find background on this family who are 4th cousins of my wife.
Justin McCarthy (c 1830 - ?) married Mary Dineen (1839- ?) in Leap in Jan 1865. He was a son of Florence McCarthy and his residence at the time was recorded as Crohane. Mary was a daughter of Michael & Cath Dineen of Shreelane.
Justin and Mary had at least seven children, all but one born in Lissangle - Kate (1866), Florence (1868), Mary (1870), Ellen (1871), Jeremiah (1874), Denis (1877) and Michael (1879). Florence went to Australia, married and had family there including a son Vincent in 1903. This Vincent married and had family including another Vincent in 1942.
I suspect but cant be certain that Justin had a brother Patrick who married Ellen Sheehy from Sherkin in 1854. This Patrick was in Crohane initially but later moved to Lissangle where he and Ellen were recorded living in the 1901 census. This couple had at least nine children including a son Patrick who took over the farm following the deaths of his parents in 1905 & 1906 - they are buried in Old Caharagh Cemetery.
Looking at the McCarthy god-parents of the children of Justin and Patrick they were part of a family of at least nine children including Charles, Florence, Julia, Ellen, Kate, Jeremiah, Mary.
There is a Florence McCarthy listed in Griffiths Valuations in Lissangle with almost 60 acres. There is no McCarthy listed in Crohane in Griffiths? There is also a Florence McCarthy in the Tithe Applotment books for Lissangle. Is this the father of Justin and/or Patrick? Can anybody cast light on what happened to Justin & Mary - no death records in Ireland that I can find. What happened to the rest of this family?
Is there an surviving member of this family who might be able to help?
Any assistance appreciated.

Hi Liam,
Sorry for long delay in getting back to you and it will be a while yet before I can deal with your query as I have had Covid and a lot of queries have built up in the meantime.
I Promise I will get to you as soon as I can.. You can contact me in my personal email address as it is sometimes a lot faster to deal with there than on this site.

My sincere apologies for delay in getting back to you Liam but I have been really up the walls since coping with Covid, visiting my two daughters abroad in different countries and a huge build up of queries that I am only beginning to get on top of.
First thing I want to clarify with you is, is there a possibility that Justin was Denis Justin McCarthy as I found a Denis McCarthy baptised in Caharagh on 19th Oct 1832, The transcription is quite doubtful both in the transcribers accuracy and the clergymans entry in the Register but there are a few pertinent facts about this Baptism. No 1 is the childs name is simply given as Denis but this was quite common in Baptismal records as space on the register was carce and the second name was more often than not left out, No 2 is that one of the sponsors was named Justin McCarthy and again it was normal practice of the time to name the child after a sponsor. No 3 is that the childs father was Florence McCarthy. The mothers name was given as Mary Cohane. This is a clan name within the McCarthy families and clergy often used it to distinguish between a husband and wife who both had the same surname. Two things about this transcription is that the name Cohane could be a misspelling by the Clergyman for Keohane and the Register entry has very paoor handwriting and the name Mary to me is very doubtful for transcription from what is in the Register No 4 The place of birth is given as Lassanroe which is the next Townland to Clohane which I think helps to link the birth to Florence,
You might have the time to check to see if there was a Florence McCarthy listed for Lassanaroe as this would help in confirmation of the above. Have done an extensive search for deaths of Florence & Mary without success.
Let me know if any of the above was helpful and I wo;; continue to search for family. If there is anything specific I can help with, let me know.

Frank,
No need to apologise - Covid and family visits are far more important than family history queries.
I really appreciate the info and the insight provided. I will review than and see where it takes me. Again many thanks

Had a look at the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffiths for Florence McCarthy in Lassanaroe but found none.
I did find a Florence McCarthy aged 4 in the 1911 Census in Lassanaroe and a 1941 marriage probably of this same person. He was the 2nd son of Jeremiah McCarthy who in turn is probably a son of Jeremiah in Griffiths and the Tithes.
