Hello i wonder if anyone can help please?

I'm trying to track down the Hargan branch of my family, which I believe is a common surname in parts of the country.  I have simply hit a dead end.  I'm back as far as my Great Grandfather who was John Hargan, born approximately 1861 and is claimed to have been born in Ireland he settled in Stockton-On-Tees and raised a family there.  I have no real idea where in Ireland he was born.  I do know from speaking to my uncle that his father was called Thomas, but he didn't know the name of Thomas' wife.  I guess though working through naming trends of the children that it may have been Catherine, or Kate.  I also realise that this was during the Potato Famine and that people emigrated.  I've also tried various other variations of the surname, but just keep drawing blanks.   I would dearly love to investigate this line

If anyone can make any suggestions I would be really grateful

Many thanks

Christine

The surname was likely Horgan in Ireland with Horrigan and Harrigan as possibilities. Likely John Hargan was from Cork, Kerry or Limerick.

I found a couple leads on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie for a John Hargan with father Thomas.

John Horgan baptized August 26 1861 at the Cork South Parish in Cork city also know as St. Finbarr's. Father Thomas Horgan mother Julia Reardon

John Horgan baptized November 25 1862 at Kilmurry RC parish Father Thomas Horgan mother Ellen Hurly

Have you considered DNA testing? You may get matches on this line that have more info on the origins of the family in Ireland and possibly John's mothers name.

  • Hi Roger

Thank you so much for taking the time to investigate and respond.  I have spent hours trying multiple spelling of the surname and also Latin versions of Christian names.  I also DNA tested and drew absolutely no results for Hargan, I was really disappointed, however other Irish lines took me back several generations.

I shall hope that in time I gain a lead.
