Hullo from the New South Wales Central Coast in Australia,
I retired recently and having some time on my hands wanted to do some research on my family tree.
As far as I know I am a 3rd generation Australian, I have names and some details of my father, his father (my paternal grand father) who all were born, lived and died in Australia. Anecdotally my Great Grandfather was from Ireland but that is all I have to go on.
I believe that the surname Horgan was common in County Cork.
Any tips you can supply on how I should go about this search would be much appreciated.
I'll start here in Australia but I guess I also need to start the ground work in Ireland.
Kind regards,
Brendan Horgan

Co. Cork has the most Horgans in the mid-19th century but Co. Kerry had a good number also.
Hopefully, you can find your great-grandfather's name and approximate age in an Australian census. However, even with that info you will probably need more data to narrow down the likely records. If he was born 1864 or later, the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie has civil birth records.
DNA testing would also help. You qualify for a Y-DNA test which tracks your pure paternal line. However, the Y test is expensive and may not give you the best leads. An autosomal test which tracks all your maternal and paternal lines would be more helpful.
