I am trying to trace family, that may still live in Foynes where my Grandmother was born. Her name was Annie Bell Bennett and she came over to England (Plymouth Devon), and married my Grandfather. Grandma was born 15th Jan 1869 and married 16th July 1889. I imagine she may have come to England sometime between 1879 & 1889. I have her mother as being called Catherine (with maybe a maiden name of Canty), & her father as being a Robert Bennett. I am wondering if the name Bell (Grandma’s middle name) may have been her mother’s previous married name, as there seems to be quite an age gap between Catherine and Robert. I have a birth certificate which seems to tie-up with my Grandma, BUT the father’s name is down as David Bell, and his dwelling place is recorded as H.M.S VALIANT. The birth is registered in the district of Shanagolden in the County of County Limerick. I’m also think she had four (4) siblings.
If anyone is able to throw some light on this mystery I would be for ever grateful.

On rootsireland, I found a baptismal record for Anna Bell. She was bap. 7 Feb. 1869 in the RC parish of Shanagolden in Co. Limerick.
Parents: David Bell and Cath Canty. Sponsors: Michael Concannon, Hana Enright
See register here: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634934#page/35/mode/1up
My guess is that David Bell was Catherine’s first husband, that she remarried to Bennett, and that Anna took the name Bennett too.

David Bell and Catherine Canty married in the RC parish of Cobh, Co. Cork, in 1862.

It says after the bride’s name something like “renewed consent.” There are a couple of words on the right side of the entry that I can’t make out.

What was your grandfather's name? Was he Irish or English? Thanks.

Dear Patricia, Thankyou so much for the information you have been able to supply me. That really seems to answer a question, which I have been pondering for a very long time. I had tried different sites but had come up blank. Now I can try and trace David Bell to see whether he died (which I’m presuming happened), rather than David and Catherine divorcing. I will also try to trace Robert Bennett to find out when Catherine and him married.
Would you have any idea what “renewed consent” meant, after the brides name please?
My Grandfathers name was ‘Charles Oiler (Oliver) Tookey’. He was English, born and bred in Plymouth Devon.
Would you please let me know, what I owe you for the information you have found.
Many thanks

Robert Bennett (father George) a seaman on HMS Sanspareil married Cath Canty from Queenstown (fath Thomas a blacksmith) on 11 Jun 1860 in Queenstown according to rites of United Church of England and Ireland.
The mother of Mary Bell was Catherine Canty in irish genealogy

"Renewed consent"--I believe this means the couple were previously married in a civil ceremony or in another church.

The original register page of Shanagolden (RC) Parish, Co. Limerick, is clear script. The female sponsor is Hanora Enright, rather than "Hana". Hanora, frequently shortened to 'Nora'.
