Hello

my 2x g-grandmother came from Sligo; She was born in about 1841 (according to death records). As far as I can ascertain, her father was Terence McLaughlin and her mother Bridget Louby. Bridget and Ann came to New Zealand, as did Ann's brother John.

While I don't have an emigration date, Ann married in New Zealand in 1868.

I have seen an unsourced note online that says Terence and a son died during the potato famine.

My question is, as I do not know the parish they were from, where am I best to start looking?

Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to help!

The subscription site Roots Ireland has a May17 1842 baptismal record for an Anne McLoughlin with father Terrence and mother Bridget Coghlan. This may be a different Anne McLoughlin since the mother’s maiden name is different. The church was the RC parish in Sligo town. I did not see any baptismal records for siblings.

Many of the RC parishes in Co. Sligo do not have records back to 1841.

I did not locate any Terrence McLouglin marriage records.

Civil registration did not start until 1864.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi Roger!

thank you so much. I am checking back through my records and the only "source" I have for the surname Louby is from a McLaughlan family tree, but it is unsourced. So, I cannot verify it. There was one other daughter, Elizabeth Bridget, who was born about 1851. She went to Australia and married, and died in New Zealand in 1896. This information is from death notices.

Yes, I have DNA tested (Ancestry) and it is with most of the sites. I am revisiting shared matches but so far there is little to go on. The family line in NZ wasn't hugely successful, though Anne's brother, John, had six sons. He died in 1922.

I will keep hunting - thanks for your time :)
