I have included a small chart, which I hopes clarify some of this.

John Concannon Born 1819, and wife Mary B 1822 moved with their entire extended family and children around 1850. Their son Micheal is stated as being born in County Galway, and is aged 2 in the 1851 English census. John married in Ireland on or before 1847. John was a collier in the UK, and a large amount of his family and friends seem to appear in the same village around the same time to do the same occupation. They are all Roman Catholic. Every census states John and his wife are born in Ireland, but with no further details. The entire family group that left Ireland is listed below from oldest to youngest.

Mary Concannon Born C1785 (mother)

John Concannon Born C1819

Margret Concannon Born C1822 (wife) Marriage by 1847 (Margaret), maiden name Skerrett (possibly Sherratt, Sherrett)

Mary Concannon Born 1847

Micheal Concannon Born 1849 (Michael)

I am a direct descendant of Micheal Concannon, he was my grandfather's grandfather. I realise I am looking for a needle in a haystack, but I would really like to find out which bit of the county they were from.

Thank you, Alice

  • Alice:

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not locate a baptismal record for Michael Concannon or a marriage record for John Concannon and Mary. Likely these events were held in an RC parish that does not have records back to 1850 and earlier.

Have you considered a DNA test? You may get matches which will help you with the origins of your family in Co. Galway.

  • Alice,

Attached a church record from Tuam, Co. Galway of the marriage of a John Concannon to a Mary Diskin on March 30th 1845.

    Children shown:  John - June 13th 1847 -  James -  May 1st 1849, Michael - August 25th 1853- Bartholomew August 21st 1855.

Those records can be found in catholicparishregisters@nli.ie - National Library - Free

Those shown may not have any connection to your family.

Records from 1823 to 1835 have 31 "Concannon" names in County Galway. The site is free - www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy - Tithe Records.

Subscription site  www.findmypast.ie has a number of "Concannon" in the years c1800 to 1820 in County Galway

    Regards,

  • Thank you so much for the help. Honestly, anything is appreciated. Roger, I hadn't considered a DNA test, but I shall give it serious consideration. And McCoy, thank you for your pointers. I shall follow them up.

My hope is that as more records become available my ancestors might eventually appear.

    Grateful thanks, Alice
