Hi,

Looking for any descendants of Patrick & Mary Connellan who lived at Granahan near Newmarket On Fergus 1846.

3 of their sons were transported to Tasmania in 1848: John,Michael & Denis.

There was at least another son, Patrick, and daughter,Margaret.

I would love to know what happened to the family left in Ireland.Did they survive the Great Famine years?

  • Kathy:

The Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Tomfinlough civil parish (which includes Newmarket on Fergus) shows two Margaret Connellan records in Granaghan More townland. One was shown as a Jr. You have the wife of Patrick as Mary so I don't know if this is the correct family.

The second record is an 1888 death record for a Patrick Connellan from Newmarket on Fergus who was an army pensioner. Is this the Patrick in your message? Shows a widow Bridget.

I did not see any Connellans in the 1901 census for Granaghan.

  • Hi Roger,

thanks for that.I didn't expect a reply so fast.

I don't know if any of the people you found are mine, but it is possible Patrick Jnr ended up in the army.I will try that lead.

Once again, thanks very much for your help.

            Regards,

                         Kathy RUSSELL

  • Kathy,

Baptismal records and Marriage records in Newmarket-on-Fergus are from 1828.

Civil or State records are from January 1st 1864.

I attach some records in relation to a Margaret Connellan in Granahan in 1854. Apparently she was a widow and had a licence to sell alcohol and

did not abide by the conditions.

There is also in Griffith's Valuations a Margaret Connellan who has a house and garden in Granaghan More and a Margaret Connellan, Junior with a house.

Is it possible that Margaret is the widow of Patrick in Granahan and that Margaret Junior is her daughter?

In relation to Patrick Connellan; there are records for a "Patrick Connellan" in the Petty Sessions records for Newmarket-on-Fergus 1858 - 1861.

The problem is that there are a number of "Patrick Connellan's" in the parish of Newmarket, but none found in Granahan. Granahan is East of Ballycar railway

    station.

Do you have any records in relation to John, Michael and Denis. I have checked  Subscription site www.findmypast.ie but did not find any!

    Regards,

  • Hi  McCoy,

thanks for all that. Some of it I have seen before but so far I have no way of knowing if Margaret or any of the others are mine.

I have no Info about John (my gt gt grandfather),Michael or Denis prior to 1846.That is the year they were tried at Ennis by Baron LeFroy. I have copies of newspaper reports of their crime and copies of letters sent on their behalf to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, but nothing prior. There are also good records for convicts from the Australia end.

I know that in the past it was not the done thing to acknowledge a convict in the family. We certainly never knew til about 140 years later!

I am not even sure if the 3 were born in Granahan or just lived there.

According to their convict records,John was probably born in 1819,Michael in 1824 & Denis in 1827. Not much to go on,I know and it doesn't help that the name was Anglised to Conlan and records appear to be under both.

I realise that the surname was fairly common in the area and anything could have happened to the family in the Great Famine, but I continue to hope that a definite link will turn up somewhere.

                       Kathy
