My great grandfather born 1851 to 1854 in Northern Ireland; married Agnes Gilhooly 7 Jul 1873 in Hamilton, Scotland. He died 30 Jul 1901 in Glasgow, Scotland. Was told they lived near Belfast and he was a coal miner. Since famine was around this time it appears family went to live in Glasgow, Scotland. No relatives alive to help me but would love to make a connection if possible. The family was Catholic. His parents were James Ferris and Agnes Rice. So little info.

A James Ferris, 24, a coal miner born in Ireland and married to Agnes (born Lanark), with two small sons, James and Cornelius, is shown living in Scotland in the 1881 census.
I could not fine their marriage record or her birth record. Are you sure her surname was Gilhooly?

Rene,
You haven’t actually given us your ancestor’s name but I looked at the Scottish death index and from that assume he was James Ferris.
If you have the 1873 marriage certificate, can you tell us what James Ferris senior’s occupation was and also whether he and Agnes Rice were dead at that date? (It will say “dcd” if dead.) Likewise were they both dead on the 1901 death certificate? That will give us a bit more information to search with. Narrowing the years to look at as well as having an occupation to search for too.
James Ferris is a common enough name in and around Belfast and we need a bit more if we are to track the right family.
I have looked for a marriage for James & Agnes and also for James’s junior’s baptism c 1851/54 but without success so far.
If it’s of any help, I can see a birth on Scotlandspeople for Cornelius Ferris in Maryhill, Glasgow on 8th Feb 1880.
