Four Brothers.... John (abt 1834) and William (abt 1841) came to America around 1847 and moved to Columbia, South Carolina. Patrick(abt 1832) and James(abt 1842) came to America and lived in Riverhead, NY on Long Island. There has been lots of speculation on their parents and where in Ireland they were from.  Some have said Cavan and others have said Cork. I really need help with this. I have been searching for years. Does anyone know of a family who had these 4 sons who moved to America to find their fortunes?

We won't be able to determine where your McCabe ancestors came from without more information. Have you located their death records and did any of them have newspaper obits? Their parents names would be essential to see if we can locate any baptismal records. The surname McCabe was most prominent in Monaghan, Cavan, Leitrim and Meath.

Have you considered a DNA test?

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately we do not know any of this information.  There has been wide speculation on their parents but nothing that sourced correctly.  This search is for my husband, Douglas McCabe. I have been told that the state of South Carolina didn't have death records until after 1914.  All of the brothers past prior to that date. None of their obituaries indicate the parents.

Yes, my husband and daughter have both taken a DNA text on Ancestry.com. So far there have been no connections back to Ireland.  Is there an Ireland DNA test he could take that would help in this search?

    Thanks again.

No Irish DNA test to take. Those that test in Ireland use Ancestry, My Heritage etc.

There are ways to enhance your DNA experience on Ancestry. Have you added a tree to Ancestry.? There have a feature called Thru Lines which helps to identify possible family links.

Let me know if you have more questions.
