Looking for place of birth for James McCoubrey, born in 1810 in County Down, and his future wife, Jane McLester from County Down in 1811.  Any help would be appreciated.  Please email me at doganabeer@yahoo.com with any information.  Thank you.

  • Scott,

You do not indicate what religion your ancestors were.

Clough Presbyterian in Co. Down has a number of baptisms and marriages from 1792.  Subscription site  www.rootsireland.ie

The concentration of families named "McCoubrey/McCoubry" appear to be in the area of Loughinisland - Downpatrick.

No baptism or marriage found for a James McCoubrey in County Down in the years 1790-1810.

Have you any information on parents/siblings.

Many of the Church of Ireland records were stored in Dublin and were destroyed during the Irish Civil War in 1922.

It is possible that there may be some records in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland in Belfast.

    Regards,

    McCoy

  • Scott,

The Ros Davies site lists a number of McLesters, mostly around Downpatrick. That fits with McCoy’s information on McCoubrey being common in Downpatrick & Loughinisland. (The couple probably came from the same general area).

You haven’t said what denomination these 2 families were. That’s crucial to know because for folk born c 1810 you have to rely on church records to trace them. Not all have survived and of that that do still exist, not all are on-line.

If the McLester family were RC, then Downpatrick RC records don’t start till 1851 so you are unlikely to find anything on Jane’s baptism or marriage, but obviously if she was a different denomination, then there may be records to search in PRONI.

  • Thank you for the replies to this post.  I do not know the religion of the McCoubreys or McLesters in 1810-1812.  The replies are much appreciated.  Scott
