Hi!  My husband's 2g grandparent Andrew Morrissey was born 18 Mar 1837 to parents John Morrissey (b@1810) and Ellen McClosky (b@1800). in Kilkenny (not sure if in county or city). Andrew emigrated to Boston 1855.   Hoping to travel to Ireland next year and will be in Kilkenny.  If anyone has any info about the Morrissey line in Kilkenny it would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

  • Chris,

Subscription site  www.rootsireland.ie  has a record of an Andrew Morrisy baptised in Gowran, Co. Kilkenny on March 19th 1836.

Parents: John Morrisy and Nell Il (Illegible).

Address: Cloghala - Poor Law Union of Thomastown.

Civil Records - www.irishgenealogy.ie do not show death records for a John Morrissey or an Ellen Morissey in Gowran.

  • Chris,

Attached copy of Griffith's Valuations for Cloghala -printed 1850.

There is a Michael "FLUSKEY" in the same townland.

Ellen's surname may have been "Fluskey" rather than McClosky?

You can download those records for free  www.askaboutireland.ie/Griffith's Valuations

  • Thank you so very much!!!  I apologize that Griffith's place names and Irish place names are so confusing to me.  Can you clarify where they would have actually lived?

'the information says Andrew was baptized in Gowran (would it be the Gowran chapel I found on the old Griffth's map?). You listed parish: Dungarvan, Townland: Cloghala, Place name: Cloghala.    I have found Gowran and Cloghala on the old Griffith's map but they seem to be a bit of. a distance apart.  Would they have lived in Gowran or Cloghala?   Is it possible for you to describe where on the old Griffith's map where they lived?  (I totally do not understand Griffith's). Many thanks!!!

  • Chris,

Attached Church Record of the baptism of Andrew Morrisy in Gowran parish on March 19th 1836 and

location of the townland of Cloghala. The map gives various locations to the town of Gowran.

John Morrissey did not have a farm in Cloghala, so it is difficult to point out his house and garden.

  • Mary (Nelly) Morrisy B: abt 1790 Kilkenny. The spelling varies; often spelt "Moresy". Mary Morrisy married Martin Broderick.probably around 1812 They lived on a small farm located in townland called Killoshulan. I have been down many rabbit holes and not found the right Morrisy family yet. According to Griffiths Valuation Andrew and Michael Broderick must be related along with many other Brodericks in Johnstown, Darbys Hill, Tullaroan, Three castles, Thomastown.

The Morrissys that you mention sound familiar and I think they are an old Kilkenny family. Hence the spelling more Gailic. One theory I have is that the Morrissy were involved in cooperative network of grocers, bakerys agriculture and dairy. I imagine that Mary Morrissy would walk over to Freshford to Chapel St. to work at Morrissy Grocery and that the other Morrissys were sprinkled in nearby townlands. This occupation intensified during the potato blight 1849 and this effort to to help with food and clothing was central in these familys possably close proximity to farms could isolate a family despite the simlarity of names but also each family unit in records as sponsors and witnesses. For example I find Holohans and Conways in records with our Morrissy family that married about 1812.

When I find the Records, that will add some credible evidence to the history going back into 1700s for Morrissy of Kilkenny. often spelt Moresy and variants.
