Hi,
I'm trying to resolve a family mystery. It concerns my Great Grandmother Rose Anne Cassels (nee Cox). I am trying to find out who here Mother and Father were and what happened to them. In the 1901 census of Ireland Rose Anne is living with her Grandparents Peter Eivers (or Evers) and Mary Eivers (nee Connefry) at age 14 or so in Cornagresha North, Breandrum, Mohill, County Leitrim. So she was born around 1887. I can find no church or civil record of her birth or baptism.
In her marriage record of 11 August 1904 it is stated that her Father was a Thomas Cox but I can find no viable record for Thomas or a marriage between him and an 'unknown' Eivers i.e. Rose Anne's Mother.
In the 1911 census she is still living in Cornagresha just a few houses away from her Grandparents with her husband John Cassels and 3 young children.
I have attached a photo taken in 1963 or so of four generations of my family outside Ussaun House, Mohill, Leitrim in case it may jog memories. Left to right Rose Ann Cox, Bessy McCaffrey, Doris Daly and myself.
I would be eternally grateful if anyone out there can shed any light whatsoever on Rose Anne's early life.
Thanks,
Tom Daly

Like you, I did not locate a civil birth record or a baptismal record for Rose Anne Cox. I also did not see a Cox/Eivers marriage record.
I located this 1889 death record for a married Thomas Cox. The informant was his mother Rose. See second record. Looks like Drumnid townland. I'm pretty sure this would be the father of Rose Anne.
I did not find a death record for a female Cox between 1889-1901 in the Mohill registration district and I also did not find an older Rose Cox record in the same period. The elder Rose Cox did not show up in the 1901 census.

A possible lead for Rose Anne's family...
Patrick Evers and Mary Conifry had at least two daughters - Elizabeth 1864 and Maria 1861
Marriage of John Cox and Eliza Evers Mohill 20th July 1889
Found one child so far to John and Eliza - Mary Kate born 5th December 1892 at Cornagresh, but father's residence is given as EnglandShane Wilson, IrelandXO Volunteer ☘

I thought maybe the wife of Thomas or his mother might be in the Mohill workhouse. However, the return for the inmates in the Mohill workhouse is not available for the 1901 census. There is a return for the 1911 census and full names are provided but I don't see the wife or mother. The workhousehwas in Boeeshil townland.

Hi Shane and Roger,
thanks for your swift responses. I'll try to piece it all together with what you've found and what I already know. Bear with me.
John Cox married Elizabeth (Liza) Evers in July 1889 and by 1894 had emigrated to Connecticut in the U.S. taking with them Mary Kate. They had 3 more children Rose (interestingly), John and William. In the same year they were married Thomas Cox died but in the November so this rules out the possibility that Rose Anne was John and Elizabeth's daughter.
Now John Cox's father was Patrick born and died in Drumnid and was married to ROSE Wrynne. I surmise that this is the same Rose recorded as Thomas Cox's mother in his death record. There is also the Drumnid connection. So that makes John and Thomas brothers and Thomas is therefore my 2 x great Grandfather for sure. That is a break through!
So who could be my 2 x great Grandmother? Peter Evers and Mary Connefry had 6 children, as far as I can find, 3 of whom were daughters – Catherine, Maria and Elizabeth. Catherine married Andrew Shanley, we know Elizabeth married John Cox so that only leaves Maria/Mary (unless there are other daughters I have not found). I'm assuming she must have died some time between 1887 when daughter Rose Anne was born and 1901 where Rose Anne is living with her Grandparents according to the census, however, I can find no viable death record. I widened the search out to include later years and all of Ireland but no joy. I also can not find any record of a marriage between Thomas Cox and Mary Eivers/Evers. So a brick wall here.
I appreciate the efforts you both have made and it's taken me quite a way forward in my search. If you have any other ideas or insights I'm all ears.
Thanks again,
Tom

Tom:
Any possibility that the marriage (and maybe the birth of Rose) occurred in America, England or Scotland? I know Rose was shown as born in Leitrim but mistakes are made.
