My 2nd great grandfather, Michael Connolly b. 1810; came to America from Ireland in 1834.  On his death certificate it is listed his parents are Owen Connolly and Anna Savage.  Catholic Parish Registers for Darver Parish, Louth, show a baptisim  for Rose Connolly 7 Feb 1817 whose parents were Owen Connolly and Anna Savage.  Another baptism for Mary Connolly 3 Sept 1819, whose parents are also Owen Connolly and Anna Savage; and later possibly her marriage to Owen Maginnis in Cooley, Louth, on 14 Nov 1847 (no parents named).  I'm looking for evidence of Michael Connolly's birth and if the Owen and Anna listed are in fact his parents.  And if possible further information about his family. It is possible he was born in Killinaboy, Clare.

Thank you so much,

Kathleen

  • Kathleen,

I did not find any record of a Michael Connolly, abt. 1810, in Darver, Co. Louth. The following records are found on Ancestry for the daughters, and another son that you have not mentioned:  Rose Conelly 7 Feb 1815, Mary Connelly 3 Sep 1819, and Patt Conelly 4 Dec 1821. The townland for two of the siblings is Killencoole.

Their parents are Owen Conelly and Anne Savage.

Darver birth records go back to 1787, so I do not know why there is not a record for Michael. You mentioned he might be from Killinaboy, Co. Clare; unfortunately, those baptism records begin in 1819.  Finally, Co. Clare and Co. Louth are on opposite sides of the country....do you know of a reason that the family would have relocated that far?

    Good luck with your search!

  • Hi Kathleen: I would recommend that the Louth volunteer, Pat would be the best person to look at this query. I will let him know and hopefully he will reply to you. A very Happy New Year to you! All the best, Jane

  • Kathleen, I see 5 children born to this couple, Rose's baptism in 1815 has Lurgan as the address which is probably Lurgangreen which is close but may at times be in a different parish, Bridgit in 1817 in Kilincoole; Mary in 1819 also Kilincoole; Patt in 1821 also same place; Anne in 1823 in Killeen. All Darver parish except Killeen which is in Louth parish, not too far away. There are two entries for Owen Connolly in Louth parish in the Tithe Applottments for 1834. You can view the civil townlands here https://www.townlands.ie/ civil townland and religious areas do not always coincide or may have different names. There is no sign of the marriage which may mean that they married in her parish which is the norm, with the lack of records we have to make assumptions and if Michael was the first child she may have gone back home for the birth. The Flax Growers list of 1796 also has a Connolly in Dromiskin but there area a lot of Connolly and variants about in Louth and also Savage. There are Savage baptisms in Darver / Dromiskin around the 1820 mark too which indicates there were Savages there too. If the first birth was in 1815 that is recorded there would be more children if Michael was definitely 1810 as they appear to have a child every two years but again only an observation. There is a site here on Louth but mainly lists of names and deaths, if a death of interest is listed I may have the records as I have most published records and the others are available. https://www.jbhall.clahs.ie/index.html Darver is the parish that has garnered the most queries I think and it may be worthwhile looking back over the previous queries. Also there was a plot to assassinate the local landlord in the area about that time of 1830 I think and a lot left. There is also "The WIldgoose Lodge Murders" covered on the previous site, also a book and Netflix film showing how things were circa 1815 if you care to look. At this remove we are totally or almost totally reliant on church records or estate records and often you have to assume the name is the one you are interested in. It is impossible to say if the marriage in Cooley is the same person, both names are in the area. Good Luck Pat
