Hello. I will visit Tibohine next year with the hopes of visiting the graves of my 3GG grandparents, Dominic(i) and/or Margaret Lavin, born about 1800 and 1804 respectively.

If anyone has any suggestions, please reply, and thanks so much!

  • Timothy: I checked the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Tibohine civil parish and there was no record for a Dominic Lavin. There was a record for a Margaret Lavin in Cloggarnagh townland. Possibly Dominic was deceased and the lease passed to his widow Margaret. Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. I located a record for a Margaret Lavin age 69 who died March 7 1869 at Cloggarnagh. Informant was a Michael Lavin. This record may have been for an unrelated Margaret Lavin. The surname was very common in Cloggarnagh. In fact, there were 12 Lavin households in Cloggarnagh in the 1901 census. Did any of the children of Dominic and Margaret stay in Ireland? One other comment. It would be very unusual to find gravestones for people who died in 1869 or earlier unless a grandson/daughter erected a stone at a later date. Most families had no resources to purchase a stone. Roger McDonnell
