I am trying to research the origins of my great great grandmother Catherine Divor who was born c1833 in Co. Donegal and emigrated to Australia in 1848.

Surname spelling may be incorrect.  Variations are Divor, Devor, Devir, Devon, Dever.

Her parents are recorded on her death certificate as John Dwyer and Bridget Fraser.

Catherine emigrated to Australia as part of the scheme to transport Irish Famine Orphans.

Details as follows:

Catherine Devor 16 years

Arrived : "Lady Kennaway" Port Phillip Orphans 6 Dec 1848 (85 days passage)

Admitted to Depot : 13 Dec 1848 

Date of leaving Depot : 16 Dec 1848

Religion : Roman Catholic

Occupation : housemaid

Employer's name : Ellen Stanton, Melbourne, Dressmaker, £8 per annum

Term of Engagement : 6-12 months, with rations

Parents deceased

Could read and write reasonably, and was in possession of a bible.

Native place : Donegal, Ireland

Calling : dressmaker

  • Gail: Unfortunately there are very few RC records in Co. Donegal pre-1840. The surname Dever and the many variants was found in many parishes in Co. Donegal so we can't pinpoint an area within the county to focus your research efforts. Civil registration of births. marriages and deaths did not begin until 1864. Have you considered DNA testing? Possibly you will have a match(es) with 4th cousins who may have more information on the origins of your family. Roger McDonnell

  • Hi Roger Many thanks for your response to my query. I was hoping that Dever (et al) was an unusual name and localised to a particular area, oh well, not to be. DNA is something that I have not done and will consider for the future. Kind regards, Gail.

  • Hello Gail. I am also related to Catherine Divor, she is my 3rd Great grandmother and I was hoping to find information about her here.

    All I know is she was an Earl Grey famine orphan.

    Unfortunately I havent been able to find any dna matches
