I am at a brick wall searching Jeremiah GANEY's roots in Ireland. He appears in the 1860 US Census in Chicago/Cook County/Illinois married to Margaret, with a son Henry Joseph GANEY born in New York (no records ever found there), and son Jeremiah born in 1860 in Chicago. Jeremiah is listed as a sailor in the US 1970 Census. I have no maiden name for Margaret. Jeremiah died 2 Nov 1870 in Chicago.
The only clue is "rom County Cork."
Henry went on to name one son Henry and a second son Daniel. (I add this as perhaps his father's name was Henry and his wife Margaret's father's name was Daniel?)

A check of Subscription sites www.rootsireland.ie and www.findmypast.ie did not show any "Jeremiah Ganey". The only entry I found for a Jeremiah was for "Jeremiah Geaney" who had a son - John - baptised in Aghada, East County Cork on June 24th 1811. John's mother is recorded as Catherine Mahoney. Address: Scartley. South of Middleton. Baptismal Sponsors: Maurice Cosgrove and Mary Meade. The surname "Geaney" is found mainly in County Cork. A Henry Ganey married a Mary Malone in Blanchardstown, Co. Dublin on July 2nd 1827. It is possible that the surname "Ganey" was changed from "Geaney" which is recorded as a County Cork name.
