Looking for information about my family from the Passage West/ Monkstown area.   I am a descendant of Henry Brown (died 1890) and Mary Dawson (d.1900) They lived at Marmullane Villa). I believe he was a local ship builder.  Also John Craig (b.1791,d.1868?) and Susan Mason Griffith (b.1818) of Hawkshead, Passage West.

Henry and Mary Brown had a daughter named Emily in 1842.  She married the son of John and Mary Craig who was named William James Craig (b.1842, d 1890) .  Emily and William lived at Marmullane Villa although my records say that William died at Fort Hill, Passage West.

Emily and William Brown had a son named Henry Brown Craig (b.1865, d1945). He married Anne Gertrude Malone (b.1863, d. 1904). My records show that Henry died at Marmullane House. They had a daughter named Emily Eleanor Craig who was my paternal grandmother (b.1897, d 1972) .  She was born at Fort Hill, Passage West but I am fairly sure that she lived with her family at Marmullane House for a time before marrying my grandfather Joseph Robert Hoy Cade.  He was also related to the Brown family through his father.  Other local addresses I have are Mansfield, Mount Prospect, Haulbowline Island, Queenstown.

  • Further to previous Post: The Shipping and Mercantile Gazette dated June 7th 1842 carried an advertisement from William and Henry Browne for Victoria Dry Dock and Shipping Yard. It also indicated that they were Shipbuilders. They added as footnote "Workmen are "Teetotaller". Regards,

  • Some details from Henry & Coughlin's General Directory of County Cork for 1867 that might be of interest :

Brown Craig & Co., Royal Victoria & Albert Dockyards, Strand Street (Passage)
also listed H.G. Craig (Brown C. & Co.), Mansfield

Extract from the description of Pass (West) : 'Passage is about 6 miles east of Cork, and may be reached either by rail or steamer. The town has been gradually progressing within the past few years; but still stands in need of a great many improvements. Judging, .....Vessels of large tonnage, and drawing too much water, are lightened here, to which circumstance the place is indebted for its maritime importance. But the material advancement of the town has been more successfully promoted by the enterprise of Messrs. Browne, Craig & Co., who, in their splendid docks, constructed at immense expense, give a great deal of employment to the people.

A basic listing for Passage West from Guy's Cork Almanac of 1884 shows a Henry Browne at 'Marmullane vil.', the only Craig listed in that year is a Wm. J. Craig of Rock Cottage.

A dock yard is shown in Passage on historic maps, e.g. on the 1st edition OS maps dated c1840 shows what appears to be a dry dock labelled 'Victoria Dock Yard, along with a lock gate, the later c1900 OS map shows three dry docks and several cranes alongside.

It appears that these families were probably Church of Ireland, e.g. Emily's marriage took place in the the Church of Ireland Church of Marmullane. This was the name of the small civil and Church of Ireland Parish that covered the town of Passage and two townlands - Ardmore and Pembroke - the town is in the later.

Historic records for this small Church of Ireland parish of are held by the Representative Church Body Library (RCBL) of Ireland in South County Dublin, these appear to contain baptisms starting in 1801, marriages from 1792 and death/burials from 1803. As far as I know these records are not available on any of the major websites. The RCB Library is working on a transcription project, but this may take some time to complete as there are a very large number of parishes..
