Hi all. My ancestors came to Australia in approx 1850. I have trouble locating them in Ireland. Philip Sharkey and Mary Gallaher/ Gallagher. Their death certificates indicate they were from Donegal.

thanks for any help.

regards,

Jenny

  • Jenny, The surname "Sharkey" is fairly numerous in Co. Donegal c1850 - Source: www.askaboutireland.ie/Griffith's - Free site Did they marry in Ireland or in Australia. You will need the names of their parents in order to identify them. A check on subscription site www.rootsireland.ie was negative. The Civil parish of Templecrone in the Poor Law Union of Glenties has three "Philip Sharkey" in the Griffith's record for 1857. What were the names of their children. This information can give a clue as to their parents names. Regards,

  • Talking about numerous Sharkey surnames, my Great Grandmother was Mary Anne Sharkey, Daughter of James Sharkey from Donegal born 1797, Son of Owen Sharkey from Donegal born 1765, Son of Hugh Sharkey from Donegal born 1745,  as normal records seem to stop at Hugh.  My Great Grandmother, as a young person arrived at some stage in the West Coast of New Zealand along with her Parents, who I believe are buried there.
