My Great Grandmother, Margaret was born in Thurles 11/05/1828. She married Michael Ryan (1825-1890) in 1854 before they emigrated to Queensland.

Margaret's parents were Patrick Maher (1794 -1884) and Mary Long (1799-1874) who also emigrated to Queensland in 1861.

From my research, Patrick was a baker in Thurles and his sons became Master Bakers in Brisbane.

My query revolves around locating the Immigration Records for their children, Anastasia, Catherine, Patrick and William who were all born in Thurles and all emigrated to Queensland as adults.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Carmel,

I've read your query a couple of times and want to be sure I've interpreted it correctly.  Was the surname of the four children from Thurles MAHER?  If so, I believe I found a record for Anastasia on ancestry.com:

    Name: Anatasia Maher
    Age: 24
    Birth Year: abt 1837
Place of Origin: County Tipperary, Ireland
    Ship Name: Persia
    Port of Departure: Plymouth, England
    Port of Arrival: Brisbane
    Arrival Date: 3 Dec 1861

  • Carmel,

In the Assisted Immigration 1848-1912 Index to Queensland, there is a William Maher from Tipperary age 18 who arrived in Queensland on the ship Mangerton on 7 Aug 1861. It departed Plymouth, England on 15 Apr 1861. His birth is estimated to be about 1843.

There is also a Mary Maher, age 23, on that same ship....don't know if she is any relation.

Finally, there are five records for Catherine Maher in that index, but not sure if the ages given work for a sibling to the others. A few arrival dates are near 1861, and others are much later or earlier.

  • Many thanks Margot and Patricia.

I would like some clarity around Margot's post regarding "Martin Long 1859 Cappa/Bansha John/Eleanor.Living in Tipp.Paid for by sister Mary Long, Maitland. Ship Caribou.

What do the highlighted words mean? and were their parents John and Eleanor?

    Regards

    Carmel

  • Hi Carmel,
With Mary Long  being Margaret's Mothers Maiden name, possibly a relative to her.
Looks like the parents were John and Eleanor.
Cappa is the townland (like and area)  Bansha is a town and a Parish.

I noticed this......Cappauniac  same area as Cappa
    Cappauniac Townland, Co. Tipperary (townlands.ie)
