My Mom’s Father, John McDonagh (McDonough in USA) was born in Roundstone, Galway and lived on Inishlacken Island before he left for America and settled in Brooklyn. His siblings I am told immigrated to Portland, Maine. Mom told us she spent VE Day on an Island off the coast of Portland as she was visiting her Dad’s family. Trying to piece together who lived in Portland from the McDonough clan.
Thanks, Kathleen Flynn

What year was your father born? Do you know his parents' names? What year did he emigrate?
Thank you.

John McDonagh was born 1887 to Phelim and Maryanne (Woods)
Unsure Date he immigrated but he served in WW1 for USA in 1917. He married in Brooklyn 1922.
Thanks!

- Baptism McDonagh John 1887 Co. Galway
- Baptism McDonagh Joseph 1889 Co. Galway
- Baptism McDonagh Martin 1892 Co. Galway

Both from Inislacken

Civil records of this marriage and the births of the McDonagh children should be available on the free site irishgenealogy.ie, should you like to see them.

Thank you Patricia - I thought my grandfather told my mom he was 1 of 10 but only 7 listed here. I assume the others must have died in childbirth? I wish I asked these questions when my Mom was alive.
Phelim is a mystery. I have no info other than his parents and birth and marriage. Hard to locate a death date or burial.Lastly I tried to locate a birth certificate for my Grandfather John but no luck. Someone mentioned a fire and everything was lost.
Thanks so much for your help!

--He was likely telling the truth. I sent you the baptismal records I found on RootsIreland. I can't say there aren't other children. You might find birth records for more children at irishgenealogy.ie.

--Did you search civil records at irishgenealogy.ie? Birth records are available from 1864 on for Catholics; they were not destroyed in a fire.
Thanks so much for your help!
