Hello

I am searching for descendants of McLeans from Ballycastle and surrounding areas. My 3x great grandfather was John McLean b  cir1820, I have no concrete evidence as to his parents but I have some DNA matches that would indicate he is related to Patrick James McLean b 1810 in Ballycastle.

John married Hannah Murphy and they had 4 sons Patrick b 1848 Michael b 1854 John b 1855 and Anthony b 1860. The family migrated to the UK and their daughter Hannah was born in Wooler Northumberland in 1863. The family settled in Longbenton Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland.

I would be very interested to hear from anyone that has any information.

Karen Coatsworth.

  • You might find Brian S Turner's recent book "Family Names in the Glens of Antrim" helpful. It has a whole section on McLean. (They originated in Kintyre and on the island of Gigha.).

  • Were they from Ballycastle in Antrim or in Mayo?
