I continue to work on finding the origins of my 3x great-grandparents, James Lynch/Linch (born abt. 1799) and Mary O’Shaughnessy Lynch/Linch (born abt. 1805). As far as I know, they were from County Limerick. Someone has suggested that they lived in O’Brien’s Bridge.  I know that O’Brien’s Bridge is a townland and civil parish in County Clare, not far from County Limerick.

I have looked at some of the Catholic Parish Registers in the National Library of Ireland online collection, but they are quite difficult to read.

The Placenames Database of Ireland (logainm.ie) listing for O’Briensbridge has a description for the town that shows seven archival records. The second one lists O’Briensbridge Limerick, but most of the description is written in Gaelic. Is there any chance that someone could translate what’s written into English? Thank you.

  • Yes, I was on the English version of logainm.ie, but these are images of actual archival records, and I don't think the logainm.ie translation applies to them.

  • I came across this record for Mary O'Shaughnessy (also as Mary Shaughnessy), 1805- 1892 , the dates match as does the spouse James Lynch 1798-1876, and a number of children are listed on this record, could this be your relative?

  • Montpelier which is on the east bank of the river Shannon is often referred to as "O'Briensbridge".

    It is in County Limerick.

    List of tenants in Clyduff - A Michael Lynch is recorded, 5 entries from top of page. The year is not shown for this entry in the transcription.

    The Civil parish records Clyduff East and Clyduff West and the parish stretches from O'Briensbridge to Castletroy.

    Roman Catholic records for Castleconnell-Stradbally are from 1863.

  • Thank you for this information. Yes, the record for Mary O'Shaughnessy on Family Search is my Mary O'Shaughnessy. I have a well-documented tree on Ancestry that includes all of these people. One DNA match suggests that my Mary may have been named Margaret or Margaret Mary, born in 1807 and baptized 9 Apr 1807 in the parish of Ballybricken, Bohermore. But I haven't yet been able to verify that.

    It's very helpful to know that Montpelier is often referred to as O'Briensbridge.

    I think that the Lynch family left Ireland for Canada in about 1839 - a long time ago.
