I'm looking for help tracing my early Bonia ancestors. Patrick Bonia b1785 and Mary Murray b1785 had children born in Newfoundland in the early 1800s. Patrick's father was James/Jimi b1755. I know nothing of the family's emigration, but they settled in the southeast of Newfoundland. Spelling of the surname seems very fluid, making it hard to trace. There are still Bonias in Newfoundland; some siblings emigrated to Massachusetts ~1900.

thanks in advance!

  • As you say there are variations of this name, Bonis being one of them and there are many in the free site irishgenealogy.ie under this name

  • Thanks for your ideas, Elaine.

That Patsy/Patrick Bonia from Wexford makes me curious about the family presence there, though he's not quite in the timeframe I am focused on. I checked the "Bonis" hits as you suggest (the site gave no "Bonia" results). They are also a different time and place, but I guess I need to expand my view and search. I certainly appreciate your help!
