Good evening, I've been researching my family ancestry and on my paternal side there are storng connections to Northern Ireland and now in particular Magheragall Co Antrim.

In the 1911 census my great gandfather indicated he was born in Magheragall. On contacting the parish church there, it was confirmed there was a link and that there were relatives buried there. I have asked the Reverend to see if there is a record of my great grandfather's birth / baptism.

If there is anyone able to assist in tracing my family it would be much appreciated.

My great grandfather is Thomas Ewart born circa 1857, deduced from age on marriage certificate, however, he seemed to change his age on both the 1901 and 1911 censuses, so could be born as late as 1865!!

On the marriage certificate his father was noted to be James Ewart (farmer). I assumed he may also be from Magheragall but I'm unable to locate anything about him there. There is a John Ewart (farmer) from Magheragall who is buried in the cemetery (born circa 1788 and died 1863). I have details of John Ewart via griffiths valuations, but I have no idea if he is related or just a coincidence. What makes me think he is related is the fact that the grave is quite literally beside the other Ewart grave that I have known distant relatives buried in.

Is there anyone with connections to the Ewart's of Magheragall that have information / discoveries that may help.

Regards

Tony

  • Hi, Did Thomas stay in Ireland? Or did he go to England? When you refer to the 1911 census, do you mean the Irish or UK census?  What was his wife's name? His children? Thanks.

  • Hi Patricia, in the 1911 census (Irish) Thomas identified his birth at Magheragall, Co Antrim. He remained in NI.

On his marriage record his father is annotated as James Ewart. I contacted the parish church in Magheragall and have found a number of Ewarts mainly of a John Ewart x2 and Jonathan Ewart (3 generations). Thomas' age when compared to information in 1901 & 1911 census and his marriage in 1889 indicates a DoB approx 1858-1864. The only Thomas Ewart recorded at Magheragall was in 1858, but the father is John Ewart and not James. There are no birth records online pre 1865.

His wife was Mary Jane Donald and his children were James (Samuel 1891, Elizabeth 1894, Thomas 1897 and James (my Grandfather) 1900)

If I can secure a birth record then I can confirm his father James and identify his mother who is a mystery currently.

    Regards

    Tony
