Hello,

Please see if you can help me find any information about my great grandmother and her family.

Abbie Kane born between 1865 and 1875, female, Roman Catholic, occupation unknown.

Born in County Galway according to her obituary but I have no information regarding a town or townland.

She married a Hugh Williams in 1892 in New Hampshire, United States.

According to her U.S. marriage certificate, her father was Michael Kane, and her mother was Mary (maiden name unknown).

Four U.S. Census Reports list inconsistent ages. Sorry I don't have a more accurate date of birth.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I don't see any Abigail Kane or variants civil birth records in Co. Galway. Nor do I see any Abigail Kane baptismal records. Do you know of any siblings that Abigail had?

The surname is very common in the west of Galway so we may have difficulty finding her.

  • Dennis,

Regarding Michael Kane, in Griffith's Land Vauations which covers County Galway in the early 1850's, there are a number of "Michael Kane". Most are in South County Galway with 6 in Rahoon Parish, Galway. The main concentration is in the area of Kinnvarra to Gort with some in Glenamaddy and Ballinasloe areas. You can find those for free at  www.askaboutireland.ie

While "Keane" is the more popular surname in Connemara, there are two "Michael Kane" - One in Clifden Parish of Omey and one in the Parish of Ross which covers Leenane to Clonbur.

It would be of interest to note what was in her obituary.

    Regards,

  • Roger,

I don't know if Abbie had any siblings. There is nothing in her obituary about parents or siblings. It only says that she was born in Galway.

Thanks for the Griffith's info on Michael Kane. I'll try to see if a Facebook group can help.
