Hello, first time poster and hoping someone can help.

Am tracing some ancestors and have arrived at Co. Mayo and the Belmullet area. 
 

I’m looking at Thomas Monaghan, b. 1835-1840 ish, migrated to Scotland, lived in Glasgow and was a merchant sailor, later moved to Bradford, Yorkshire. Also his sister, Sophia (Sibby?) Monaghan, who followed the same migration path. 
 

From censuses, I have them as Co. Mayo natives, with references to places that suggest Belmullet or perhaps Mullet Peninsula.

Their parents were Anthony and Margaret (Lavelle?). Anthony was a “fisher” and both were dead before 1863.

Any ideas where to go next to find more info? I see the Belmullet and Kilmore Erris parish registers don’t back that far.

Thomas listed the place name Barwich on census returns, but can’t see anywhere that matches that (Barrack?), though I have spotted a merchant sailor called Anthony whose dates fit from Inishkea.

Any help appreciated!!!

  • I searched for a baptismal record for Thomas Monaghan but as you indicated the parish registers for the parishes in the west of Mayo do not go back far enough. 

    Have you considered a general DNA test possibly you will have matches who have more information on your Monaghan line.
