I am trying to find information on my great-grandmother, Alice. She died Alice O'Neill, on April 25th, 2015, in Newham, London. She was born in Tyrone and moved to England with her children and her husband, Matthew O'Neill. Matthew was born around February 1921, with his birth registered in Cookstown, to parents Joseph Henry O'Neill and Sarah Mcevoy. He died in Newham in 2004. As for Alice, I cannot find much about her apart from the fact that she was 88 when she died, meaning she was born around 1927. Other people have her listed as Alice Bell in their family trees on ancestry, with her mother listed as Winifred (Winnie) Bell. However, I am unsure if this is true and, if it is, if Alice's maiden name would be different depending on who her father was.
I would appreciate any insight into how I can find out more about her. Thank you!

Hi Aoifa,
Unfortunately there are no records available yet for births due to privacy regulations , did you look for a marriage registration in the UK records? This might give the name of her father and birth place

If they had children born in NI you would need their birth record, PRONI would be the place to search or request.

RootsIreland gives the following civil birth record for Alice Bell in 1927. Her mother was “U Mary Bell”—this is a transcription; you should check the actual register. No father’s name is listed on the birth record. At the bottom is a mention of Matthew O’Neill of Mullinahoe.

Thank you all! I have found a marriage record for Alice and Matthew - which lists their marriage date as the 16th of September 1947 - where Alice was 20 and Matthew was 26. Whilst his father is listed, hers is noted as ‘unknown’. I assume maybe this could make sense why she has her mother’s surname?

Yes, it appears that Alice did not know her father's name. She was born out of wedlock and the father was not listed on the birth record. So she had her mother's surname.
