I>Trying to trace the origins of my McGinn ancestors.My GGG/Grandfather Thomas McGinn died in Dumbarton ,Scotland 1890 age 61 born c1829 Ireland.From his death cert his parents were Thomas McGinn ,teacher in school,deceased & Margaret McGinn m/s Murphy.He married Bridget Connolly in 1846 in County Louth according to his daughter my GGG Grandmother Catherine McGinn's birth cert in Dumbarton1864.Bridget Connolly McGinn died 1901 n Dumbarton age 73..Thomas & Bridget had 8 children,born in Ireland were,Thomas c1851,Margaret c1851 and Sarah c1853.Ann was born 1855 in Glasgow and the other children Ann,James ,Mary and John were all born in Dumbarton Catherine being the youngest in 1864.The family is listed in the Dumbarton 1861 Census so they must have come to Scotland between 1853 and 1855.I have searched Co.Louth Catholic Parish records not an easy read with no luck.Bridget Connolly McGinn probably had a brother James as he registered James' birth is 1857 and is listed as an uncle.I found a James Connolly ,born Ireland and family in the 1881 Dumbarton census.I need to follow that up.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello David, I am afraid I have been unable to locate any of the information you mention, now this may happen if the parish does not have records for this period or there is a gap in them, I have searched Roots Ireland and while I see a Thomas McGinn and a Bridget Connolly had two children in County Down, one in Newry which borders Louth and the other somewhat further away both in Coutny Down in 1846 and 1848 I think, a Hugh in Newry 1851 and Joseph in Annaghalone which appears to be further north in Down, there are other Connolly / McGinns in Monaghan but names are not the same.
There is a County Louth sit here https://jbhall.clahs.ie/index.html a few McGinns but mainly lists of people. There is also a Down site here https://rosdavies.com/ There is a separate McGinn file here in the surnames section and the two baptisms I mentioned are there but no more and too early too. They all appear to be Catholic and as you mention the registers I assume we are on the same page, Church of Ireland records were lost about 40% plus in the civil war and they did not record the mothers surname on the baptism.
If you see any graves of interest on the Louth site I have records of or can access a lot of them so let me know if I can assist. I have a small census taken in mid Louth in about 1852 on another computer and some received assisted passage by the landlord as the holding were not viable in size and I might get lucky there, if I do I shall post it.

I really appreciate your efforts to help .I will follow up the links you sent.County Down is interesting I came across an entry on Family Search yesterday showing Thomas McGinn the father of Thomas McGinn b1829 as coming from possibly Co.Tyrone or County Down there was no other information the entry was two years old ,I have sent a note to the poster asking why they entered those comments.
