Ulster Historical Fdn has just completed research on my behalf, searching for my William Roulston/Eliza Wray ancestors.  Indicators point to Carricknamanna.  His parents:  William Roulston & Mary Carson.  Her parents:  James Wray & Mary Patterson

William and Eliza were married on 11 Apr 1844 at Carnone Presb Church. Baptism records of of three children, William James in 1844, Mary in 1847 and Eliza Jane in 1848, were confirmed.

They also noted the baptism records of children of five other Roulston couples in this time period, likely related to my ancestors:

  1. Children of William Roulston and Jane Cochrane:  Catherine (1834), James (1835), Lilly (1838), Matilda (1840) and Cochran (1843).

  2. Children of George Roulston and Fanny Wray:  Mary (1835)

  3. Children of David Roulston and Elizabeth/Fanny Wray:  Robert (1835), John (1837), James (1840), David (1845), Samuel (1849) and Fanny Margaret (1853).

  4. Children of Christopher Roulston and Martha Carson:  Robert (1836)

  5. Children of Johnston Roulston and Martha Kilpatrick:  Eliza Jane (1839)

They also found in the 1911 census of Ireland records of both Wray and Roulston families still living in the townland of Carricknamanna, including a 78-year-old David Roulston, making him born circa 1833 and a similar generation to William Roulston and Eliza Wray.

Would love to hear back from anyone who can connect to these families.

Thank you.

Lynne

  • You have obtained great information. There is a Facebook group with strong links to the area of Donegal where the Ulster Historical Foundation advised indicators for your ancestors. A posting similar above could generate responses from people with Roulston family knowledge.  If using Facebook and seek membership to this group you can then post your details or I could make contact with an administrator on your behalf?

  • Kia Ora Lynne,

I have William John Adams Wray (1832) married to Mary McCurdy (1838) whose daughter Jane King Wray married James Roulston the son of David Roulston (1833) and Elizabeth Elliot (1838). The families are all centred around Carnowen (Carnone) and Carricknamanna. David Roulston's daughters Margaret and Jane married John Bates of Carnowen.

    nga mihi

  • To Alan Papprill,

Thank you for the names.  Not  sure I can connect to any of them at this point.  Wondering if you are the "Alan" I found on Ancestry.com, in which case can you message me there with a link to your tree?

Hoping to get abroad one of these days!

    Regards,

    Lynne

  • Kia Ora Lynne,

I'm sorry I dont have an Ancestry account. I have a very messy tree on Family Heritage that has been corrupted with multiple registrations of the same families which may help you although I haven't inserted the Wray linkages as I have only just discovered them through Violet Russell ( viandrons@gmail.com ) who has links to the Wray, Roulston, Elliot and Wray families.

    nga mihi,

    Alan

  • Dear Alan,

I've. been in touch with Violet.  According to our DNA match, we are 4th-6th cousins!  But I guess this also makes you and I some-teenth cousins as well?  I'll have to be back in touch with her.  She has two trees on Ancestry. One is private and on the other, I don't see any Wray family, only one core Roulston and a marriage to Bates.  Thank you for her email address.

  • Dear Alan,

I just looked up the greeting and salutation in your first message and discovered the language is Maori!  Are you in NZ?

    aroha nga mihi,

  • Kia Ora Lynne,

Yes I am a Kiwi. My mother emigrated, with her family, from Ireland in 1927 to settle in Whanganui. The Bates family diaspora took the family members to Jamacia, Canada, USA and New Zealand.

My wife and I have just spent two months travelling through Canada making contact with the different Bates families scattered across the provinces.

Violet looks to be my third or fourth cousin.

There is a growing trend for NZers to use Maori in a saluation in letter writing indicating the assimilation of Maori into NZ English.

  • Good morning, Alan (or good evening for you!)...

I think it's great that languages share.  And any time a Haka video shows up in my FB feed, I watch it numerous times.  I love the community it presents, the power, the confidence.  We should teach this to lower level school grades to build that confidence.

I made contact through the Donegal FB page with the creator who happens to be a Roulston so she is going to look through her well researched tree and see if any of "my" people show up.

Over a year ago, I was contacted by a woman in Australia who learned from her DNA test that we were 3rd cousins.  Her great grandfather and my great great grandmother were siblings.  Both left Heidelburg DE for greener pastures...he to Australia, she to NYC.  I knew about him but being in Australia, hadn't bothered to fill out that branch.  With her help, I have been able to do so and we have been corresponding every two weeks or so, getting to know each other, each others' families and cultures!   What a wonderful gift.

Hope you enjoyed your Canada trip.  My late husband was from Toronto and I worked here in NYC on behalf of Canadian radio and TV stations selling advertising time (a few life-times ago...LOL)...so I got to see a lot of the country visiting the various stations I represented.

Waiting for the remnants of a hurricane to come through later today. My cousin in Florida suffered some damage and flooding, but nothing terrible.

Thanks for writing. I'm enjoying the exchange.

    Regards,

    Lynne
