Anne Guest, born abt. 1832 in Modreeny, Co. Tipperary married Thomas Hodgins of Boultree on 17 May 1870. They were Church of Ireland. She was the daughter of William Guest and Anne ? I am trying to confirm the maiden name of Anne Guest's mother. I believe her surname was also Guest. Thanks for your help!

Dear Patricia,
Thank you for researching my question! I subscribe to rootsireland.ie, so I already had found the transcript you provided. I tried to find the marriage record for William Guest (1787-1869) to Anne? using rootsireland.ie, findmypast.com and familysearch.com, with no results. FamilySearch reproduced the Modreeny Parish Register (COI) and I went through the marriages, but did not find one for William Guest and Anne, although there were baptism records for the children. I believe their first child was Margaret Guest, born 1829, then Anne Guest, born 1832, then John (born 1834,) George (b.1837,) James (b.1838) and Adam (b. 1838.) Are there any local resources I could try?

Thank you Margot! I've spent days searching, but did not come across the marriage of William Guest and Ann Mooney in 1824! Do you think the National Archives would have the full record (with parents and witnesses) if I applied for a paper copy of the marriage license? Would I have better luck requesting the marriage record from the Killaloe COI parish? About how much do they charge for such a service? BTW, Garraun townland also confused me, because there is one in Co. Clare, and Galway, as well as in Co. Tipperary. Pam

Hi, for C o I records you use PRONI the Public Records of Northern Ireland, this is in Belfast.
It is expensive and take time, but worth a try.
As the licence only says Killaloe you don't know the Church.
St Kieran's was the C o I. up to 1976. The church was a rebuild in 1828. That is where they married.
I know this Church and Cemetery as my grandfather is buried there with other family.
Modreeny Tipperary Church and Graveyard | Ireland Reaching Out (irelandxo.com)This Church has the same name but it's in Cloughjordan town. Try there for information first before PRONI.
I know this one as my cousins live near there.
Saint Kieran's Church (Modreeny), The Square, Church Street, TOWNFIELDS, Cloghjordan, TIPPERARY NORTH - Buildings of IrelandWhere are you? if you don't mind me asking.
Find a Grave - Millions of Cemetery Records
just use the surname and modreeny and the rest will pop up. There are Hodgins and Guest people. Relatives have to upload the headstones and information.
There are people who do add information which does help.Cheers

Dear Margot - Thank you for all the advice! Since retiring, my husband and I live in Illinois to be close to our daughter. Before that, I lived in Dobbs Ferry, Westchester County, New York. My Dad, however, was born in Shinrone Co. Tipperary in 1913. I know he grew up on a farm, but I'm not sure whether it was one called Boultry or Dangan, since he mentioned both of those names. At age 14 he was sent to live with a recently widowed aunt, living in the Bronx, New York. She was the second wife of Charles Hodgins (1848-1927- born in Cloughjordan,) a NYC policeman. Her maiden name was Emily Jane Guest (b.1861 Cloughjordan.) My grandmother told me that both Emily Jane Guest and Charles Hodgins were direct relatives. My Dad's mother, sister, and two of his brothers remained in Ireland. My Dad never went back, but I visited twice while my Aunt Emma was alive. Sadly, they are all now deceased. My aunt and uncles had no children. At the time of my visits, I wasn't much interested in genealogy. I wished I had asked more questions! Happy Spring! Pam
