Searching for information regarding the Hedican/Hedigan family or numerous other spellings.  Martin Hedican born 1825 or 1829 in Kilmacduane/Cooraclare.  Father Michael Hedican/Hedigan; mother Catherine "Kate" Normile/Normyle.

Martin married Mary McNamara possibly in 1847 and daughter Mary/Maria was born in 1847.  Mary/Maria left for Australia between 1859 and 1865.  A lot of confusing information.  Some have her leaving with a sister Bridget as servants to a family migrating to Australia.  The only Bridget we have found is a step-sister born in 1867.

Mary McNamara may have died in childbirth or sometime later as Martin married in July, 1865 and stated he was a widower.

Mary/Maria married John Phillip Harper in Geelong, Victoria in 1869.  They had 15 children and Mary/Maria died in 1932.

Another very confusing fact.  On the birth certificate of my grandfather Thomas Henry Harper it states the mother as Maria formerly REICHEU.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

  • Cherrill,

Please see attached records in relation to Martin Hedican. It would appear that he lived in Churchtown. Civil marriage records him having married a Margaret McNamara in 1865.

There is a record of a Catherine Hedican having been baptised in Cooraclare in 1857. Her mother recorded as Ellen Keane.

  • Cherrill,

Two records for "Hedigan" in Coporaclare 1855 and 1859. In the 1855 record her mother is recorded as Catherine Keane and in the 1859 record Ellen Keane which corresponds with Catherine's records.

  • Cherrill,

Further records on Hedican-Hedigan - Cooraclare.

Can we assume that the Martin Hedican who married in 1865 and the Martin Hedigan wo is farming in Kilmacduane East in c1855 are the same person.

It appears that a Mary Hedigan, daughter of Martin Hedigan in Kilmacduane married a Martin Synan.

  • Cherrill,

Please see County Clare Library  - clarelibrary.ie.

In churchtown graveyard there are two memorials to "Hedigan" John Hedigan who died in County Clare in 1916 and a reference to a Catherine Hedigan who died and is buried in New Jersey, USA in 1930. They are Numbers 136 and 137. Ref. Donated Material.

    Regards,

  • Very much appreciated your messages and apologies for the delay in responding.

The search has been difficult as I also found a marriage between Martin Hedican and Ellen Keane in 1854 who had at least 5 children.  Ellen died in 1882.  Also, a marriage between Martin Hedican and Mary Clancy in 1861 who also had at least 5 children during the same period.  Mary possibly died in 1910.

The Clare County Library also told me that frequently Hedican and Hedigan were the same person.

Years ago I found a Martin Hedican age 18 who married a Mary McNamara age 21 in 1847 on Ancestry but have not been able to find it again.

My "gut" feeling is that Martin married Mary in 1847, daughter Mary was born in 1847.  Mother Mary may have died in childbirth or soon thereafter and that is why daughter Mary went to Australia.  Father Martin said he was a widower when he married Margaret McNamara in 1865.

A granddaughter of Mary Hedican who knew her documented that the went to Australia with her sister Bridget in 1867; however, the only Bridget we have found is the daughter of Martin and Margaret who born born in 1867.

The Martin Hedican who married Ellen and Mary cannot be the same Martin who married Mary McNamara and was the father of Mary Hedican.

If you find any other information I would be most grateful.

  • Cherrill,

Please see attached record of a John Hedigan who married a Mary McTigue in Kilrush in1846 and later married a Robert Daxan in Kilrush in 1857.

As the Civil Records in Ireland are from January 1st 1864, no church record of the death of John Hedigan have been found in the years 1846 to 1857.

Robert Daxan lived in the townland of Carrowdotia South in the parish of Killimer - Kilrush.

There are a number of press reports which confirms his existence.

  • Dear McCoy,

Many, many thanks for the information you sent and apologies for the delay in responding.  I have recently been advised that "my" Martin did marry Ellen Keane; however, I am still unable to find out when and where Mary/Maria left Ireland for Australia.  Her death certificate said she had been in Australia for 73 years so that would have made her 12 or 13 when she arrived in Australia; however, I was recently advised that she arrived when she was 17.  Also, I have a document from her granddaughter who said she arrived in Australia with her sister Bridget so that is even more confusing as Bridget was much younger than Mary/Maria.  The search continues.

    Again, many thanks,

    Cherrill
