We are planning to visit Tipperary between 14 Sep 24 and 16 Sep 24.  We would like to have a look at Tipperary and see the County that they lived in and hopefully connect with some Bourke Tierney family.

I am researching my 2x great grandparents' life in Tipperary. I have very little information about their life in Tipperary or their parents name apart from the name of Margaret's father being Tierney.  I have not found any records or information about their places of Birth except Tipperary.

Edmund Junior and Michael Bourke were Watchmakers according to Electoral Roll and Directory Information in Victoria Australia and family stories.

Edmond Michael Bourke and Margaret Tierney

My 2 x great grandparents were Edmond Michael Bourke, a Farmer/ Stonemason and Margaret Tiernay.  According to Margaret's Death Certificate they married in Tipperary when she was 25 years old.  The only Marriage Record that I can locate is 4 Feb 1837 Diocese of Cashel and Emly. - Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers 1655-1915.

Margaret Tierney b 1810 - Co Tipperary died 16 Nov 1888 at Port Melbourne (Sandridge). BDM Vic Death #15160/1888. On the Death Certificate it states Tierney for Father's surname but parents names unknown.

Children

Edmund Bourke b c1841 Tipperary died 28 Aug 1886 age 45 at Port Melbourne (Sandridge) BDM Vic Death #10439/1888

Margaret Bourke b Tipperary 1848-1888 died 29 Feb 1888 Age 40 at Port Melbourne (Sandridge). BDM Vic Death #3181/1848

Michael Bourke b Tipperary 1851-8 July 1925 died Prahran  BDM Vic Death #11201/1925 Port Melbourne (Sandridge)

I have searched but so far have not found the Birth Records for the 3 children.

Circa 1853 Emigrated to Australia with wife Margaret, children Edmund, Margaret and Michael.  Cannot find a Shipping Record for this family as yet. I have not found the Birth Records for the 3 children.

On 28 August 1858 Edmond Michael Bourke died at Emerald Hill, Victoria of Hemorrhage of the Left Lung. Inquest 1858/900 at Public Records Office Victoria.  There was no Death Certificate issued. Therefore we do not have Edmond's Parents names.

  • I came across this entry for Fethard 1850, https://fethard.com/research/fethard_1850.html, v

    FETHARD HOUSEHOLDERS 1850

ALPHABETICAL LIST COMILED BY MICHAEL O DONNELL.
    Owning CarrickonSuir 1998

    BURKE, Edmond. Main Street.
House, office and yard. Ref: 70/24. He was listed in Slater's Trade Directory of 1846 as painter and glazier, but is not listed in that of 1856. He was the father of General Thomas Francis Burke after whom Burke Street is named. The family left Fethard about 1851.
    BURKE, Edmund. Fethard.
Land of 3 acres, 2 roods and 19 perches. Ref: 70/63. Possibly that same as the above.

IT is interesting that the family left Tipperary in the same time frame as you mentioned. I will try for more information.

  • Thank you Eileen and Margo for the information.

When Edmund and Margaret emigrated they had three children. The marriage record for 4 Feb 1837 is hard to decipher on Ireland, Catholic Registers Parish Registers 1655-1915 for Diocese of Cashel and Emly. It is the only Marriage record that I have found so far.  I will investigate the information that you have suggested.

  • HI Margot

National Library of Ireland; Dublin, Ireland; Irish Catholic Parish Registers; Microfilm Number: Microfilm 02495 / 05 (From Citation Record on Ancestry).

Title: Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915

I found the Marriage Record on Ancestry. I am not sure if it is the right marriage but so far it is the only one that I have found that fits with the dates I have for Edmond Bourke and Margaret Tierney.

    Thank you for your help.

    Regards

  • Ok, I know why I cannot find it......Microfilm 02495 / 05 it is missing form Registers on line.
I see it now.  yes it is in Tipperary town.

    This is in detail ok.
In Griffiths valuation This is a follow on for the Tithe records. Edmond is in Ballytarsna Townland, Also known as Hackett.
He is listed in plot 27 and 28...........this link is for the map. before you open it read this.............
You will see a white circle and a red oblong/square just below the top red line in the middle zoom in slow and you will see the name Ballytarsna, then Hackett.
You will see in red 14 15 16 follow the road down and you come to 27 and 27 on the left. That is where they lived.
Now  on the right side of the map you will see Historical map with a slider, keep you eye on the 27 28 and move the slider to the left for modern.
This is the road you will take. ...........if you are driving for Dublin, male sure you exit the M8 at the Horse and Jockey (nice hotel there)
    Ok.

  • Hi Margot

Thank you for the information, when I click on the map the link comes up with

"These maps are part of the website www.askaboutireland.ie. Please visit www.askaboutireland.ie to view them".

As I am new to this, I assume that I go to Griffith's Names, put in the surname and County, how do I find the Barony, Union and Parish?

    Regards
