Hi, I am looking for help with my McCutcheon ancestors. I believe Richard McCutcheon (~1791-1861) emigrated to Canada with his family around 1841. His children were Isabella, Mary Ann, Emily, Hugh, and Thomas. They came to Northumberland County in Ontario in the early 1840s. I have no evidence that Richard's wife, Amelia (or Emily) came to Canada with the rest of family. I'm not sure if she died before 1841 or if she emigrated with the family and died shortly afterwards. She has not been located in any of the Canadian records. Richard's daughter, Emily, said that the family emigrated in 1841 on the SS Dumfrieshire which left from Belfast.
The Griffiths Valuation surveys for Monaghan took place after 1841. The Tithe Applotment Books have no "McCutcheons" in Monaghan but they do have McCutchin. There is a Rich'd McCutchin recorded in Grigg Townland in Monaghan in 1830 (http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587423/00…).
I have a feeling that my McCutcheons may have come from the area around Drum as they settled in Canada near others who came from this area. The McCutcheons' religion was Church of Ireland.
Thanks for any help or response or suggestions.

In the 1851 census of Canada, Eliza McCutcheon is living with Richard and several children. Could Eliza be Emily/Amelia?

Drum is in the civil parish of Currin. Currin Church of Ireland has baptism records starting 1835, marriages 1812 and burials 1816. Have you searched them for the family?
There’s a copy of the records i9n PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast where you can search them free. Rootsireland (subscription site) also has some years but my guide does not say which years.

Thanks very much Elwyn. I will see if the records at PRONI are online, if not, I will figure out how to access through a paid researcher or will search the next time I am in Ireland.
Patricia, thank you very much for taking the time to post the Census records for Richard in Canada in 1851 and 1861. The 1861 Census in Alnwick Township, Northumberland County, Ontario is my ancestor, Richard. The 1851 Census from Middlesex County, Ontario is not my Richard. This 1851 family of McCutcheons in Middlesex County is often confused by researchers with my McCutcheons located in eastern Ontario but I have determined that they are different families although both are led by a man called Richard McCutcheon.
Thanks once again for your response.
