I am visiting the area in a few days and looking to see if anyone on the message board lives in the area and would know if any relatives of this family still live in the area near Borrosokane, Co Tipperary and might have information on parents, siblings, places of burial etc.

Family info:

John Healey (Blacksmith) b: ~1830 d: 1896 (Borrisokane workhouse) m: Anne Kennedy b: ~ 1830  d:1879 (Borrisokane)

They had 7 children:
John Healey b: 1855 (Borrisokane) (my grandfather) -immigrated to Philadelphia and married Winifred Corrigan.
Matthew b:1856 (Birr and Loughkeen)
Catherine b: 1858 (Birr and Loughkeen
Margaret b: 1859 (Birr and Loughkeen)

Mary b; 1861 (Templederry)

Martin b: 1866 (Borrisokane)

Anne b: 1868 (Borrisokane)

Might anyone know if any if John's siblings stayed in the area and might have info on their grandparents or other information? Would love to know if family still resides nearby and possibly meet them.

I do plan to visit Thurles library to see if they have workhouse admission records for Borrrisokane, contact the keeper of the cemetery, and visit the church.

Any suggestions of other local sources of information that I should search for that I might not find online?

Thank you,

Nanette

  • If John and Anne followed Irish naming patterns, the second son, Matthew, was named after his maternal grandfather.

I found the following baptismal record on RootsIreland for an Anne Kennedy, daughter of Matthew.  More info would be needed to confirm whether this is your ancestor.

    Name: Anne Kennedy
        Date of Baptism: 26-May-1836
    Address: Youghal Parish/District: YOUGHALARRA
    Gender: Female County Co. Tipperary
        Denomination: Roman Catholic

Father: Matthew Kennedy Mother: Anne Street

  • Hi Patricia,

    Thank you for this.
Please tell me what you think of the following?

Two of John and Anne's children had a sponsor named Kitty/Citty Kennedy. Assuming this is a diminutive of Catherine? That she sponsored 2 baptisms leads me to think she is a close relative.

I when further and searched for another child of Matthew Kennedy named Catherine in hope this was Anne's sister. This is what I found:

Same father's name, same address area, but mother's name is Nancy not Anne - however Nancy derives from Anne (and priests sometimes insist on certain name formats).

Do you think this could lend more weight to this parental connection? (Likely will never prove absolutely, but be honest with me if you think this is too far a reach...)

  • Nanette:

One of our volunteers in a nearby parish made some inquiries but could not come up with any leads. She suggested you visit the Borrisokane parish office which is next to the church.

  • Hi, In answer to your questions...

--Nancy/Anne is likely the same person.  I often see records for women named Anne who are nicknamed Nancy.

--Godparents were generally relatives. Catherine Kennedy was likely Anne's sister or sister-in-law.
