On Sept 2nd, I leave the US to fly to Belfast to attend a conference until the 12th when I leave to fly back to the USA.  I will be doing research at PRONI for some of my Irish families:

One of the Irish families I am seeking information on is Patrick Riley (b Mar 1830 in County Cork).  I believe this family immigrated to New York, New York, USA in 1849.  It is believed that this Patrick Riley married Catherine F (Unknown Surname) (b 1836 in Ireland), they had 8 children that apparently were all born in the USA.  It is believed that the parents of Patrick born in 1830 were Patrick Riley born unknown year and Kathrine Logan born 21 Nov 1889 in County Galway, Ireland.

If anyone can supply me with research item names/areas to review while at PRONI it would help me, hopefully, find records on the Riley's without having to loose time determining where and what I should be reviewing.  About 2015/2016 I attended this conference hosted by the Ulster Historical Foundation only that time I ended up taking all the tours I could so didn't do much researching.  This time it will be different.

I may be incorrect regarding what info is available at PRONI but I believe their records focus only on the six counties in Northern Ireland. Co. Cork is in the Republic of Ireland.   https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/campaigns/public-record-office-northern-ireland-proni

From your note, it appears that Patrick Riley born 1830 likely married Catherine in America. Have you used sites like ancestry.com and familysearch.org to trace your family in America. Possibly there are additional clues regarding your Irish connections.

Have you taken a general DNA test which may give you matches on the Riley line. These matches may have more info on the family.

There are free sites available online which house Irish records and also subscription sites like Roots Ireland

Let us know if you have further questions.

  • Roger, first I must apologize for not getting back with you sooner.

Thank you for the information, I read your message and then ended up loosing it since this was my first encounter with an IrelandXO member and actually thought I was in another site.

Your information is most appreciated and I have to research some of the records I have to prove or dis-prove some of my information:  I have a Canada Census for 1851 that shows Patrick and Catherine with both being born in Ireland but different counties along with age at next birthday of 22 and 20.  I believe that this is not my Rileys as the 1900 Minnesota Census lists Patrick and Kate as each being naturalized in different years and as I'm sure you know couples already married when immigrating only need the male to apply for naturalization.  But, this is an area I need to work on and your message gives me places to look.

    Again, thanks for your message,

    Judie
