Hi My cousin and I will be visiting County Fermanagh during within the first two weeks of January 2025. We are staying in Derry from 28th Dec 2024 to 2nd January 2025. We may visit Enniskillen and Killesher during this time or shortly after when we start heading south. We will also be visiting Dungloe in County Donegal where our gg grandfather, John McELGUNN married Eliza BOYLE on 25 April 1845. John's parents were Owen McELGUNN and Bridget MAGUIRE.
We are hoping that we might be able to meet someone near Killesher who might be related or know where we could find more information about our McELGUNN ancestors.

I looked at the 1828 tithe applotment records for Killesher parish. There was an Owen Gilgun farming there then. Gilgun is probably a variation of McElgunn. (The Mc & O prefixes on Irish names are detachable and it’s common to see names without one).

Owen was farming in the townland of Derryhollagh (more commonly Derryhawlagh).
The family had gone by. the time of Griffiths Valuation (1862). There were about 15 homes in the townland at that time.

Derryhawlagh (134 acres) is quite close to Carrybridge. It’s on the Derryharney Rd, near the junction with Belle Isle Rd. It’s mostly still agricultural land with just a couple of farms on it.
This was the only McElgunn I could find in Killesher in the 1901 census. He was evidently born in Fermanagh but being a caretaker, I can’t be sure precisely where he was from.

John, I know someone in the Killesher area who has a great knowledge of family history. I will endeavour to speak with her to see if she knows any oral history, this isn't far from Florenceourt House, now a National Trust property but is a potential place where a caretaker would have worked, not conclusive of course but if they kept records something may be able to be gleaned. It is a bit of a wild card but sometimes that's what we need to pursue, since your McElgunn line seems to have left the area so long ago. It may take me a little time to get back to you so feel free to remind me. If I do find out anything, I would be happy to meet with you in January, perhaps in Enniskillen first as it is more central and then to Killesher - Derryhawlagh which isn't far from me.

Hi Linda, thank you for responding to my request regarding my McElgunn ancestors from Killesher. I hope you are successful contacting the lady in the area who has knowledge of family history.
