Hi I have been searching for birth records of my Husbands Great Grandfather John Francis Corrigan.
I was told that he was born in America but his parents died over there. And he was brought over to Ferney Moorefield Co. Tyrone, where he is named as FRIEND to the Doran family at the age of 3 years of age.
He is later found in the 1911 Census with the same family and is listed as farm Servant. I was told that the Doran family were Aunts and Uncles of John Francis Corrigan. There presumably when over to America to bring him home. I know that this is very unlikely as I have found a newspaper article saying that they couldn't afford medical Stamps in 1899 to 1900.
In the 2 Census John Francis Birthplace is down as County Tyrone not America.
With the date of Birth giving to me 03 April 1898. I cant find a John Francis born with his D.O.B. The only 2 Births that are close to the year of Birth is one born 19th of April 1897 Gargrin Fintona this Child later died the same year parents James Corrigan and Mary McGinn.
The other John Corrigan born 16 May 1897 in the Omagh workhouse to an Ann Corrigan from Blacklion Co.Cavan ( I think) dead in Omagh Asylum on the 2nd of August 1912 aged 40 of Melancholic exhaustion.
I tried looking up www.irishroots.ie for records and I have found a Baptismal record for a
John Francis Corrigan.
D.O.B Blank.
Address Church Street.
Parish Dundalk County Louth.
Date baptised 05-May-1897.
Father's name is Blank.
Sponsor informant Ellen Gormley.
Mother Mary Ellen Corrigan.
Denomination Roman Catholic.
NOTES P Finegan// ILLEGITIMATE/ RETURNED AMERICAN NATIVE OF Tyrone.
I was thinking could this be our John Francis Corrigan. I am wondering if this is the same John Francis Corrigan (my husbands Great Grandfather) why would someone go as far away to get some one baptised. Assuming that either he was born in America and was taking home then baptised in Dundalk County Louth.
I know that there is a John Doran married to a Rose Gormley in Stranagormer Irvinestown in 1864 and this could be the possible link to the Ellen Gormley the Sponsor Informant.
I think that John Doran ( A brother of Francis Doran from Ferney Moorefield) and his wife Rose Emigrated to North Attleboro Bristol Massachusetts.USA.
Also the Doran family had 2 Children ( Isabella Doran and Anne Doran) who Emigrated Living in Pawtucket Providence Rhode Island.
I am very curious if any one could give me details of how families and the church dealt with an illegitimate Child or a child that was orphaned. I am at a lost at why the Doran family didnt record John Francis Corrigan as a relative if that was the case. I am also wondering would families have been paid to bring up other family's children if that family couldn't look after them. Also if any one knew of a Mary Ellen Corrigan who maybe had relatives in Dundalk? Or if there was a mother and baby home in Dundalk? I would be really greatful if anyone may help me in anyway either to rule in or rule out the connection of the John Francis Corrigan who was Baptized in Dundalk. Thank you.

Magscor,
Did you notice the discrepancy in JF's age on the Irish censuses?
In 1901, he was said to be 3; thus born c1898.
But in 1911, he was said to be 18; thus born c1893.
Ages can vary a good deal in old records, but still I thought I'd point this out. Maybe JF was born earlier than you believed?
