Hello,

I am looking for the grave of my great grandmother Frances Slevin (nee McGlinchey) who died 5/11/1880 in Letterkenny, Donegal.

I have searched through a number of Letterkenny cemeteries online with no luck.

Also looking for the grave of her daughter Bridget Slevin who died 4/10/1883 Big Isle, death registered in the District of Manorcunningham, Letterkenny, Donegal.

Both were RC.

I know nothing about the McGlinchey family. Through Ancestry DNA I have found that I have some very good matches with McGlinchey in their family trees. One match in particular lives in Strabane. Although I have reached out to these matches there is no reply.

We are coming to Ireland in May 2025 and spending 5 days in Donegal so very much hoping that I can find some information here.

regards and thanks in advance.

  • Mary,

Bridget's death certificate states she was a labourer's daughter. In the 1800s few labourers could afford a gravestone and most were buried in unmarked graves.  That may explain why you have not found a grave for the family. The RC church rarely kept burial records and few graveyards have records for the 1800s so you may struggle to locate the grave. You could try asking the parochial office if they have any information.

  • Hi Mary!

If you get a chance, could your complete our Meet and Greet form   https://www.irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet

I went looking for a civil birth record or baptismal record  for Bridget Slevin. The only record I found was for a Bridget Slevin baptized September 8 1861 in Letterkenny. Parents were listed as James Slevin and Mary Sweeny. Your Bridget was 17 in 1883 when she died which would would imply a birth around 1866.

I looked for other children of James Slevin and Mary Sweeny and found a civil birth record in 1876 for a Daniel Slevin. He was born in Big Isle.

See fifth record at this lonk.https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1876/03034/2112109.pdf

I did not find any records for Slevin children with a mother with the surname of McGlinchey.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thank you Elwyn,

I know that my g/grandfather was a shoemaker, as was his son, my grandfather. Would a shoemaker have been able to afford a grave stone?

    Also thank you Roger McDonnell,

Yes I have completed the Meet and Form.

Your reply gave me something to think about.  I know that g/grandfather John Slevin was a shoemaker and his wife was Frances McGlinchey.

This Bridget, daughter of James Slevin and Mary Sweeny cannot be our Bridget.

So not sure what happened to Bridget or when but her father father married again after Fanny's death (to Helen(Ellen) McLaughlan) either before or after going to Scotland with his sons. The boys were John Patrick b 1864? (my grandfather)  , Daniel 1869, Thomas 1870, Francis 1873,  Michael 1875, Henry 1878, and last Patrick 1879.  Apart from John Patrick we found the bap records with Conwal and Leck parish. I did find John snr in the 1881 Scotland census.

Ancestry has a record for Biddy Slevin born or bap 21/8/1865, daughter of John and Frances McGlinchey.  She was alive when her mother died as she was present at death.

So I guess I have to keep looking for Biddy.

    Many thanks
